Hinata-Yakushi is one of Japan’s three renowned Yakushi temples, hosting a grand and traditional festival every year on April 15th.

The festival features the Shigi-nobori, a prayer for safety, led by a specially trained or self-taught priest (Shukensha). It includes fire walking (hiwatari) and a ceremony displaying a Buddhist image (honzon-okaicho).
The Shukensha, dressed in yamabushi attire (mountain ascetic hermit robes), perform rituals while blowing conch shells after purifying the four cardinal directions with bows and arrows. They ascend trees as high as five meters to pray for the fulfillment of their religious discipline.
