🎋✨ For two days, the streets of Uchiko came alive with color as the annual Sasa Matsuri filled the town with vibrant handmade decorations, music, dancing, and festival spirit.

Every year, local groups and businesses create elaborate sasakazari — large, colorful decorations that transform Uchiko’s shopping street into a celebration of summer. One of the festival highlights is the Sasa Odori Dance Contest, bringing teams of dancers into the streets and adding even more energy to the summer evening. 💃🎶

With food stalls lining the streets, music playing, and people dancing beneath the colorful sasakazari, Uchiko was buzzing with summer festival energy.

Thank you to everyone who joined us this year and brought so much life to the streets! 💛

If you missed it, we hope you’ll experience it with us next summer. Uchiko Sasa Matsuri is held every year in early August, so add it to your Japan summer travel plans. 🇯🇵🎋

🔥 Once a year, the mountains above Teramura, Uchiko light up with a message written in fire: 山ノ神 — “Mountain Deity.”

Thousands of small flames, known locally as 𝘰𝘩𝘪𝘬𝘢𝘳𝘪, are arranged across the mountainside to create the glowing characters — the most striking sight of the Teramura Mountain Fire Festival, a tradition that has been passed down since 1823.

But the festival begins long before the mountain lights up. Members of the community climb Rokkaku-yama to offer prayers to the mountain deity, continuing a tradition rooted in gratitude for the blessings of the mountains and hopes for a plentiful autumn harvest.

Back in the village, the streets were filled with food stalls, live music and a lively procession, including Yosakoi dancers and taiko.

After dark, the festival takes on an almost mystical atmosphere. Surrounded by mountains and darkness, with the characters 山ノ神 flickering in fire high above the village, it can feel as though the mountain deity itself is quietly watching over the celebration. 🔥⛰️

For more than 200 years, this small mountain community has kept this remarkable tradition alive, lighting up the mountainside every August 15.

The lantern floating at the end of the evening filled the river with a gentle glow, creating a peaceful and unforgettable atmosphere.
