JAPANESE CRAFTS – How do you travel in a way that gives something back? In Japan, one answer is to go to the places most visitors skip entirely: a craft-focused boutique hotel in Toyama, the pottery-lined streets of Kurashiki, the eastern wilderness of Hokkaido where Ainu traditions are still practised and passed on.

Most visitors to Japan never know these places exist. That’s the problem with exploring Japan today. While 45 million visitors chase the same viral spots, the country’s deepest cultural treasures remain behind closed doors.

We believe there’s a more meaningful way forward, one shaped by intention, respect and personal responsibility. A conscious way of approaching each journey, more deeply personal, connected and purposeful than ever before. This is the Mindful Traveller’s guide to Japanese crafts ⛩️

INDIGO — Five generations, twelve indigo vats, and a Shimane workshop that has been dyeing fabric since 1870. In the small town of Yasugi, Takashi Amano is the last practitioner of ‘Hirose Kasuri’, a resist-dyed cloth tradition that once defined an entire region of western Japan. Threads are bound, dipped and worked by hand until the fibres absorb the dye, emerging green from the vat before oxidising slowly into the deep, distinctive blue that has come to define this corner of Shimane 🧵

In our brand new book, Shokunin, we document 25 artisans dedicating their lives to preserving Japan’s endangered craft traditions – from family-run studios with no apprentices to female-led workshops breathing new life into historic practices. This book is our mission to ensure these voices are heard and these traditions survive. Your purchase supports their visibility and helps keep these traditions alive for future generations.
