Japan Family Travel Hack —> the Tatami Room
The standard hotel setup can be a challenge for families. We’re experts in room configurations, adjoining rooms and pullout sofas, but Japan has a magic trick up its sleeve… the tatami room!

Futon beds laid out however you like on the bamboo matting. Keep things flexible, add a bed without stressing the design, and sleep all together in the same room! It always reminds me of sleeping in front of the Christmas tree as a child… minus the tree of course.

If you need help finding sensible sleeping in Japan or elsewhere we are here!

Our job is to find your vibe.

Coming to Europe and want to be by the water? Well, are you Atlantic or are you Med?
Are you calm seas or wild with swell?
Are you a spritz under a striped awning or a local pet nat in a paper cup?
Are you oysters or olives?

It’s not too much to ask to have it all, but you cannot have it all at the same time. I guess that’s why they invented the road trip!

So what’s your vibe? Can we help you find your spot?

Kyoto - Look at all those tourists!

Here’s a quote from a client who’s there now, in the very height of cherry blossom season: “it doesn’t feel too full to me. I think I was expecting all of Japan to be totally overrun with tourists, so this has been manageable for sure… we’ve walked many streets and not run into anyone! It’s felt very easy!”

So, what’s the fuss about? Kyoto IS having a record yesr, so how can you visit and still walk empty streets?

1. Visit the must-see’s EARLY! For another family of clients we organized a cycling tour with our man Naoki. Start time 7:30am. Yep. It’s early. But riding empty streets and seeing quiet temples before they get packed is well worth it.
2. Step one street over. Kyoto is a city for calm and peaceful living. Follow the locals, not the tourists in rented kimono.
3. Stay uptown. Four blocks north of Nishiki and it’s a different vibe.

Hooray for synergy, things taking shape, and the power of brining creative like minds together! We’re keen to do more of this with this beautiful community and we have a couple big projects that are doing just that, including a school in Costa Brava (soft launch programs beginning Sept 2026!). If you’re keen to chat, throw some ideas around, or just to be kept in the loop, send us a DM here or [email protected] . 😘

We’re getting a lot of trip design requests for this celebrated Greek archipelago for this summer. If you’re thinking of an Odyssey here are our top 3 tips.

1. AUGUST -yes it’s hot and busy, but it is also WINDY! If august is your travel window, picking your spot makes all the difference. Moving away from the “Chora” (main town) thins the crowds. And with the Meltemi winds whipping from the northeast or northwest, a southern central spot will be most sheltered. Pick your daily activity based on wind direction. There will be a sheltered cove somewhere for you!

2. FAMOUS ISLANDS? AVOID! -The two big stars, Santorini and Mykonos, offer direct flights from Europe and quick ferry hops to other islands, but are otherwise best avoided. The spots we prefer have a bit more elbow room.

3. TAKE THE SLOW BOAT -It can be tempting to take the fast ferry, if one’s available, but the big slow boats are smoother, more fun and and offer a hilarious window into Greek holiday culture. Plus, if the swell does pick up you’ll be grateful for a chance to walk the deck and feel some spray on your face (most fast ferries have no outdoor areas).

If you need ideas or help, we’re here!

Guys we’re not going to lie…life has been tricky since we stopped moving. Many of the good parts about rooting down and being in one spot have eluded us since landing in Barcelona. One thing we’ve been working on is focusing on the moment, on what we feel grateful for now. Sometimes that requires switching things up. This morning that meant a last minute decision to skip the normal work routine. We went outside, got some much-needed sun on our faces, we all MOVED our bodies, we took the doggies walking and enjoyed their joy, and we stopped at our favorite neighborhood cafe. Today we didn’t take it for granted and that felt great.

Feeling the pressure to buy more stuff?? Here’s another idea… give your family a memory, not things.

We’ve handpicked 4 trips so good they might replace gifts entirely. These are experiences that can help reset and reconnect, that can open us to new ideas and new ways of being, and that will stay with the whole family long after the holidays fade.

If you’re craving meaning over more, start here.

DM “TRIP” for ideas.
