Did you know? Kyoto is secretly a capital of coffee culture ☕️✨

When you think of Kyoto, matcha and traditional green tea are probably the first drinks that come to mind. But here is a surprising fact: Kyoto is actually one of the top consumers of coffee and bread in all of Japan, boasting a deeply rooted coffee culture.

The city is filled with incredible places to enjoy a cup. You can find historic kissaten (classic Japanese coffee houses) that have been cozy, quiet sanctuaries for locals, students, and artists for decades. At the same time, Kyoto has a thriving modern wave of sleek specialty coffee roasters. These two worlds exist beautifully side by side.

In Kyoto, coffee is woven into daily life. It is very common to find charming cafes tucked away in quiet residential alleys, overlooking serene rivers, or even built inside beautifully renovated machiya (traditional townhouses).

Whether you prefer the nostalgic charm of a retro kissaten or the modern vibe of a specialty espresso bar, exploring Kyoto’s coffee scene is a wonderful way to experience the city's relaxed side.

Next time you visit, take a little break between your temple strolls to follow the rich aroma of roasted beans. You might just discover a perfect cozy corner to sit and unwind. 🌸

The Art of Kappo: A Deeply Personal Dining Experience 🥢✨

When exploring the food culture of Japan, you have probably heard of "Izakaya" and "Kaiseki." But have you ever come across the word "Kappo"? While it is incredibly popular among locals, it remains a beautifully hidden layer of Japanese dining for many travelers.

So, what truly sets Kappo apart?

While an Izakaya is casual and Kaiseki follows a highly structured, traditional course, Kappo sits beautifully in the middle. The term highlights the core philosophy of preparing food right in front of the guest, defined by a warm intimacy with the chef. In a Kappo restaurant, you typically sit at a counter, just inches away from where the chef masterfully finishes each dish. You get to hear the sizzle, see the precision of the knife work, and experience the cooking with all your senses.

It is a deeply conversational and customized dining experience. Food lovers in Japan often have their own favorite Kappo spots, a trusted place where they can talk with the chef, ask for recommendations based on the best seasonal ingredients of the day, and enjoy a meal tailored just for them. It represents the height of relaxed luxury in Japanese dining.

These photos are from a wonderful Kappo restaurant I visited recently, where the harmony of seasonal flavors and the chef's dedication reminded me of why this style of dining is so special.

If you are curious to step behind the curtain of this local culinary world, I would be more than happy to guide you to some of my favorite hidden spots.

Kyoto in May: Basking in the Peak of "Ao-momiji" (Fresh Green) 🌿✨

The city has completely transformed. Right now, Kyoto is in the heart of its most vibrant "Ao-momiji" (fresh green maple) season.

Everywhere you turn, the sunlight filters through a sparkling canopy of young leaves, creating a glowing world of emerald and jade. This period—far from the bustle of spring and autumn—offers a unique sense of stillness and pure, refreshing energy. If you are looking to truly immerse yourself in this tranquil "green moment," this is the best time of year to visit.

These photos are from Shisen-do, a historic temple in the tranquil northern hills. Here, the carefully pruned garden forms a perfect frame for the dramatic, lush green leaves, making it one of the most stunning spots to sit and simply absorb the beauty of the season.

The Grand Finale of Spring: Aoi Matsuri Starts Tomorrow! 🌿✨

The wait is finally over. Tomorrow, May 15th, Kyoto will travel back in time for the Aoi Matsuri (Aoi Festival), one of our city’s oldest and most revered traditions.

The main highlight, the Roto no Gi procession, begins right here at the Kyoto Imperial Palace (Kyoto Gyoen). At 10:30 AM, a magnificent living scroll of over 500 people dressed in elegant Heian-period costumes, alongside stately oxcarts and beautiful horses, will slowly depart from the palace gates. Decorated with glossy green aoi (hollyhock) leaves, the procession will wind through the city streets toward Shimogamo Shrine, and finally make its way to Kamigamo Shrine in the afternoon.

This festival is the true grand finale of Kyoto’s spring, where the vibrant fresh green of May meets over a thousand years of unbroken history.

Heading out tomorrow?
If you are planning to watch the procession, we highly recommend arriving early to secure a good viewing spot, especially around the Imperial Palace grounds where the atmosphere is incredibly grand.

For those who want to dive deeper into Kyoto's rich festival culture or plan your next seasonal journey, our concierge team is always here to guide you. Enjoy this breathtaking day of tradition! 🌸

The Aoi Matsuri Season is Upon Us 🌿✨

May is just around the corner, and that means Kyoto is preparing for one of its most elegant traditions: the Aoi Matsuri. As one of Japan’s three major festivals, it is a living scroll of history that captures the refined spirit of the Heian period.

The highlight of the festival takes place on May 15th with the Roto no Gi—a grand procession of over 500 people dressed in exquisite Heian-era costumes, parading from the Kyoto Imperial Palace, passing through Shimogamo Shrine, and finally arriving at Kamigamo Shrine. It is a breathtaking sight, but the spirit of the Aoi Matsuri begins long before that. Throughout early May, various rituals and ceremonies take place across the city, building a beautiful atmosphere of anticipation and grace.

If you are planning to join us for this special season and want to experience the true depth of the Aoi Matsuri, our concierge team is here to help. Whether you are looking for the best viewing insights or want to deepen your understanding of the rituals, let us help you make the most of this historic time in Kyoto.
