Yesterday during our tour in Kyoto, we witnessed a beautiful and rare tradition;
the Misedashi, the official debut of a young Maiko in the Kamishichiken district.
She came to Kitano Tenman-gū Shrine with her okāsan ( the mamasan of her okiya )
to offer prayers for success, protection, and artistic growth.
After the ceremony, they visited the nearby teahouses and local shops to greet everyone in the community.
A gesture called Omawari, a way to show gratitude and respect.
Since Tenman-gū’s deity, Sugawara no Michizane, is the god of scholarship and the arts,
this shrine is the perfect place for such a special beginning.
A new Maiko is born in Kyoto 🤍
a tradition of grace and dedication that continues to this day.
