Kyoto · Musha
When numbers begin to crowd our lives,
We need a room that can hold emptiness.
We restored this century-old machiya at the foot of Higashiyama.
Not called a hotel, nor an inn—
It is simply named Musha.
Musha does not mean empty of all things,
But returning everything to its rightful place—
Here,
Morning does not begin with an alarm,
But with the sound of light traces moving across tatami through the bamboo blind,
And the distant bell ringing from Kiyomizu-dera.
Push the door open to see maple leaves,
Look down to find moss.
Here,
Afternoons need not be spent rushing.
Sit by the central courtyard,
And wait for a maple leaf to spiral onto the gravel.
Here,
Evenings require no words.
The cypress bath steams with the scent of hinoki,
Whisper with the night breeze under the eaves,
And watch as the moon-viewing window frames the garden into a living ink painting.
In this machiya,
Time slows,
Senses sharpen,
You will hear the rhythm of your own breath.
When it’s time to leave,
No need to say goodbye.
After all, those who have visited Kyoto
Always return.
And from the moment you step into Musha,
You have already carried a piece of ‘emptiness’ back with you.
