Big wheels keep on turning!⁣ The Gion Matsuri, considered one of the most important festivals in Japan and first held in 869 to appease the gods, finished its final parade this week with a procession of elaborately decorated wooden floats, some up to 25 metres in height, through the streets of downtown Kyoto.⁣

Despite the summer heat, our guests all enjoyed the spectacle and the festive local atmosphere!

There’s no better way to finish our Nishiki Market and Gion food walk than feasting on freshly prepared kaiten (conveyor belt) sushi made right before your eyes at one of our favourite Kyoto restaurants which has been mastering this for over 60 years! 🍣🥢🍻

As the rainy season (梅雨 - tsuyu or ‘plum rain’) in Kyoto finally kicks in and everything turns various shades of lush green, it’s hard to believe a little over 2 months ago the city was exploding with flowers and spring life!⁣
⁣
At that time, we met these friendly locals and a couple of Californian globetrotting hippies while on our Ginkakuji and Philosopher’s Path half day guided walk. Always beautiful no matter what season and lined with unique artisans’ shops plus stunning temples, we highly recommend a visit!

Kyoto wouldn’t be Kyoto without the big festivals (Gion Matsuri in July) as well as the smaller ones specific to each neighbourhood when everyone gets involved.⁣
⁣
This is at our nearby shrine where the local lads recently donned their traditional Shinto whites and big shoulder pads then carried the golden Mikoshi (portable Shinto shrine) through the streets while shouting Yoisho (heave-ho!). A fun day out which usually finishes with sake and cold beer to celebrate a job well done!⁣

Enjoying authentic ‘Shojin Ryori’ vegetarian cuisine at the summit while enjoying sweeping views of Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest freshwater lake. This is the food that has sustained Kyoto’s monks and monastic life for centuries and we highly recommend it!⁣
