In Japan, the torii gate is widely recognized as a symbol of sacred space. For this reason, there is a custom of placing small torii gates on walls and fences to deter urination and littering. Because people naturally feel that they should not defile a place marked by a torii gate, this method is said to be genuinely effective.⛩️
