In Japan, the torii gate is widely recognized as a symbol of sacred space. For this reason, there is a custom of placing small torii gates on walls and fences to deter urination and littering. Because people naturally feel that they should not defile a place marked by a torii gate, this method is said to be genuinely effective.⛩️

Suikoushya Kyoto offers extracurricular activities for any woodworking fans who would like to visit and learn about what the city has to offer when it comes to traditional Japanese wooden architecture. They include temples, shrines, tea houses and traditional town houses such as machiya.

Working on a sliding door! 🚪

This home is located in a quiet corner of the Sagano area, close to Nison-in Temple, Rakushisha, Jojakkoji Temple, and the Bamboo Forest—an area where the changing seasons are felt as part of everyday life, from spring cherry blossoms to mossy greens in the rainy season and vivid autumn foliage.

Set just off the path leading to Seiryoji Temple, the property enjoys a calm atmosphere away from the crowds. The main house and an annex face a shared courtyard, where a large Japanese maple provides gentle shade.

The main house opens generously toward the garden, with a veranda that softly connects indoors and outdoors. Its single-story structure offers both openness and a grounded sense of comfort within a compact layout. The annex, slightly removed from the main house, works well as a study or bedroom, offering privacy and flexibility.

Preserving features such as old beams and a traditional tokonoma alcove, the house is being carefully renovated to bring out its inherent character.
