The main shrine is located in Hotaka and there are two auxiliary shrines: one on the peak of Oku-Hotakadake Mountain and another in Kamikouchi. The three shrines are respectively known as Satomiya, Minemiya, and Okumiya and are collectively said to host “The Local Gods of the Japanese Alps.” Every year on September 27th there is a famous Boat Festival held at the shrine. The land between Nagano and Niigata Prefectures, including the mountainous North Alps area, is not ideal for rice harvesting or many other types of crops due to the hills and cold weather.
