Did you know that Yuki-tsumugi, a traditional craft from Yuki City in Ibaraki, is one of Japan's oldest silk-weaving traditions?
Refined over more than 2,000 years, this technique still relies on silk threads spun entirely by hand. Known for its soft texture, lightweight feel, and exceptional durability, Yuki-tsumugi is used to create high-quality kimonos and other traditional garments.
This remarkable craft is so unique that it has been inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list!
One of the best places to experience Yuki-tsumugi is Tsumugi no Yakata. Established by a local wholesaler with more than 100 years of history, the facility features museum exhibits introducing the craft, an on-site shop selling handmade items such as shawls, wallets, and accessories, and workshops where visitors can make their own Yuki-tsumugi coaster as a unique souvenir.
