Known as one of Japan’s Three

Hidden Regions and relatively cut off from the rest of Japan until fairly recently, for centuries Iya and Oboke have been places to escape and hide for fugitive warriors, wandering ascetics, and hardened woodsmen. Enclosed by some of Shikoku’s highest mountains and dotted with bucolic hillside villages, the Iya Valley still maintains much of its traditional agrarian lifestyle. Along with its fresh air, welcoming residents, and dense forests, the natural offerings here often stand in stark contrast to the rest of “modern” Japan.
