The Hachimantai Aspite Line opened on April 15, unveiling the magnificent Snow Corridor❄️
Enormous snow walls towering up to 5 meters tall silently watch over the slowly budding spring of Hachimantai🌸
As you drive through the Snow Corridor, the sheer snow walls overlap at every curve, creating a mysterious sight akin to a gateway to another world🌀
The crisp April sky and sunlight contrast beautifully with the snow.
This year is warmer than previous years, so the snow corridor is melting faster than usual.
If you want to catch this view, now’s your chance!

🌸 It’s time to show off the Morioka sakura again! 🌸

These pictures were taken around Uchimaru and Morioka Castle Ruins Park (Iwate Park). Each spring, the park and surrounding area come to life with pink and white cherry blossoms, making them the perfect place to take a stroll or stop for a picnic amid Morioka’s plentiful nature.

Full bloom came to Iwate this year around mid-April. But don’t worry if you missed it – the sakura will be back next year for you to catch, just as beautiful as ever! 📸

March 11 marks 15 years since the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. The massive magnitude 9.0 earthquake and resulting tsunami caused the deaths of around 20,000 people across Japan and enormous damage centered on the Pacific coast of the Tohoku region. Significant portions of Iwate’s coastal cities were completely destroyed and washed away by the tsunami. Many precious lives were lost that day, with casualties from the disaster amounting to approximately 5,100 deaths and 1,100 missing persons within the prefecture.

Iwate Prefecture observes a moment of silence at 2:46 PM, the moment the earthquake struck, to honor the memories of those who lost their lives and their hopes for the future of the region.

These pictures were taken at Kamaishi Memorial Park and the neighboring Tsunami Memorial Hall. At the Memorial Park, the names of the deceased victims are etched into the lower wall, and the height of the tsunami is inscribed on the upper wall. The Memorial Hall displays the actual scene of the disaster and teaches disaster prevention, ensuring that the lessons learned from that day will never be forgotten.

Reconstruction and restoration efforts in Iwate Prefecture are steadily progressing, allowing us to overcome the sorrow experienced that day and move forward with conviction.

Come and see the works of a worldwide childhood icon! 🎨
Until March 22, the Iwate Museum of Art is hosting the special exhibition “Leo Lionni and His Circle of Friends”, showcasing a wide variety of illustrations and designs by American artist Leo Lionni!

Lionni is best known for his children’s books, such as “Swimmy”🐟 and “Frederick”🐭. His work is a staple of children’s literature all over the world, including Japan, where it’s famously read in elementary school language classes. This exhibition features original pages from his books on display and space for kids and adults alike to sit and read.

But it’s not just about his books. The exhibition also includes many of the posters, adverts, sketches and paintings Lionni created over his more than 60 years as an artist, working in advertising as well as producing personal work. It’s a fascinating journey through the career of a beloved author and illustrator – make sure to catch it while it’s here!

Here’s a closer look at Kaishindo’s yokan lineup.
First up are the traditional yokan that allow you to taste the quality of their azuki beans🫘 and sugar. These are the original kuroneri ⬛ (black cane sugar), the honneri🟫and the walnut 🐿️ .
Also, we have their flavored yokan, including matcha, black sesame, salt, and blueberry. They also have seasonal flavors, like chestnut🌰 in the fall. With these flavors, you can enjoy local ingredients with that same silky-sweet yokan texture.

You can choose from either classic bars or convenient mini-yokan, so find your favorite flavor and enjoy a traditional taste of Iwate.
In addition to their flagship shop in Oshu, you can also get Kaishindo’s yokan at FES”AN in Morioka Station too. 🛍️
Make sure to keep an eye out while you’re shopping or roaming around!

The Hanamaki Toy Museum is more than a place to “look at toys.” 🪀🎲
In its welcoming, wood-scented spaces, play, craftsmanship and quiet moments of connection cometo life.

Many toys are labeled with the name of the wood they’re made from, letting you learn about different types of trees. 🪵🌲

The museum is full of hands-on activities, from a wooden toy cafeteria🍦 to harvest-themed activities🥕 and a “wooden onsen”. Even adults end up absorbed in and put at ease by the warmth of the wood and the soft sounds of toy blocks. This is a place that brings families and generations together, while also connecting visitors with the nature and culture of Hanamaki – it feels less like a museum and more like a warm shared living room. 🧸

If you visit Hanamaki, be sure to stop by!
Here, you don’t just look at toys – you feel their warmth and stories.

Have you ever tried wine from Iwate, Japan?
Iwate sits right in the middle of the world’s “Wine Belt,” sharing the same ideal climate as famous wine regions across Europe.
This week’s highlight is Kuzumaki Wine, crafted in the cool highlands of Kuzumaki Town.
They are known for wine made from the rare Japanese yama-budou (crimson glory vine grapes), which have bold acidity and rich aroma.
The winery was built 47 years ago when a town official (now the mayor!) wanted to make use of the town’s yama-budou and started learning grape growing and winemaking from scratch. Today, Kuzumaki Wine works with 25 local farmers and practices sustainable production that respects the cycle of nature.
“Nadore,” which means “you and me” in the local dialect, is one of their most popular wines. You can enjoy tasting “Nadore” and over 20 other kinds of wine for free!
For the perfect pairing with Kuzumaki wines, try Kuzumaki cheese! The town is also famous for dairy, offering everything from string cheese to caciocavallo.
Kuzumaki is a quiet highland town with very few international visitors, so come discover this hidden gem and Iwate’s wine for yourself.

The Kitakami Times is an online newsletter that provides information on food and tourism in Iwate and the Kitakami Mountains, a proposed site for the ILC, to an international audience.
