Extending 16 kilometers along the northernmost part of the prefecture, Sandankyo Gorge is one of Hiroshima's hidden natural treasures. As you walk along the different trails throughout the gorge you can encounter breathtaking waterfalls, flowing rivers and abundant plant life.

This beautiful spot is seldom visited by foreign travelers due to its distance from the city of Hiroshima and the limited public transportation available to get there. There are only a couple of buses a day which operate between the city and gorge and the ride takes about 80 minutes in total. For those who love nature and hiking though, the time and effort it takes to reach Sandankyo Gorge is definitely worth it.

What most travelers to Japan don't realize is that the mountains of Kyoto hold secrets far older than the city’s famous geisha districts. Deep within the northern cedar forests lies Kurama, a sacred peak where history, spirituality, and martial arts legends have converged for over 1,200 years.

While many visit Kyoto for its urban shrines, Kurama-dera Temple offers a journey into the heart of mountain asceticism and "power spot" energy. Discover the path where the legendary samurai Yosh*tsune once trained with forest spirits and walk the ancient trail of tangled cedar roots on our 1-Day Tour: The Mystical Forests of Kurama and Kibune. The journey concludes with a serene descent into the riverside village of Kibune, the perfect end to a day of exploration.

The Fukui coastline is home to a remarkable blend of geological wonders and spiritual heritage. The Tojinbo Cliffs serve as the area’s most iconic landmark, featuring rare hexagonal basalt columns formed millions of years ago. These massive formations stretch for over a kilometer, standing as a testament to the raw power of the Sea of Japan.

Just offshore lies Oshima, a sacred island connected to the mainland by a striking red bridge. Known as the Island of the Gods, it remains largely untouched, preserving ancient forests and a mystical atmosphere that has drawn visitors for centuries.

A short distance away in Mikuni, Takidanji Temple offers a serene look into the region’s history. Established in 1375, this temple is renowned for its unique blue-stone gate and a traditional garden designated as a National Scenic Spot. Together, these sites form a unique cultural and natural landscape on the Hokuriku coast.

Japan’s 47 prefectures offer a wealth of diversity across its unique regions. In the north, Hokkaido is famous for its national parks and fresh seafood. Central Japan, or Chubu, is the "roof" of the country, home to the stunning Japan Alps and historic mountain towns.

To the east, the Kanto region pulses with the energy of Tokyo, while the West’s Kansai region serves as the cultural heart, where you can explore the ancient temples of Kyoto. Further south, the islands of Kyushu and Okinawa offer a tropical change of pace. Okinawa, once the Ryukyu Kingdom, features a distinct heritage and beautiful beaches. Within Hiroshima prefecture, one can find many charming and beautiful locations, each with their own unique history and specialty. And one of our favorite cities in the prefecture is the picturesque city of Onomichi.

The temples, hills and stone paths around the city create the beautiful scenery which has bestowed Onomichi the title of “miniature garden.” The city is also rich in history and culture, and is home to many temples including Senkoji and Saikokuji. One of these temples is located at the top of a mountain and can be accessed via ropeway, providing a stunning view of the city landscape.

For those interested in visiting Onomichi, our 1-Day Tour: Onomichi Temples Exploration & Saijo Sake Tasting is a must!
