Today is Mountain Day in Japan! So we want to celebrate the day by talking about one of Japan's most iconic mountain valleys, Kamikochi.

Most travelers know Kamikochi for its spectacular mountain scenery. Fewer realize that it also represents a turning point in Japan's history.

Before hiking became a leisure activity in Japan, mountains like Mt. Yarigatake were sacred destinations climbed by Buddhist monks in search of spiritual enlightenment. In 1828, the monk Banryu made the first recorded ascent of the mountain, viewing it not as a summit to conquer, but as a manifestation of the Buddhist Pure Land.

Only decades later did British engineer William Gowland introduce the term "Japanese Alps," while English missionary Walter Weston helped popularize recreational mountaineering in Japan through his influential writings. In Japan, Walter Weston is known as "the father of Japanese mountaineering" and even has a monument dedicated to his work within Kamikochi.

So it can be said that Kamikochi is the place in Japan where hiking as a hobby began.
