Discover Japan's Brewing Culture in the Settaya District of Nagaoka!
Rice is the main ingredient of classic Japanese products like sake, soy sauce, and miso. Being one of Japan’s leading rice producing regions, Niigata Prefecture is home to numerous breweries making these essential ingredients.
Among them, the charming traditional Settaya district of Nagaoka City is home to many old-fashioned breweries with long histories making sake, miso, and soy sauce. Many of these breweries offer drink and food tastings and tours, so you can experience traditional Japanese cuisine culture while enjoying the charming wooden architecture, stone walls, and ambient streetscape.
Take a break at Eguchi Dango, established in 1902. This traditional confectionery store sells “mitarashi dango,” which are dumplings made from Niigata rice with a soy sauce-based sauce; and “sasa dango,” Japanese mugwort dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. Enjoy these old-time treats while gazing upon the gorgeous garden.
Nagaoka is two stations away from Niigata Station by bullet train, making it a convenient side trip to your around Niigata City adventure!
