Picture a sky-blue Victorian mansion crowned with a domed tower, rising beside a quiet Japanese garden in Mie Prefecture. That's Rokkaen in Kuwana, and the second I stepped onto its lawn, my jaw genuinely dropped. Completed in 1913, it was designed by Josiah Conder, the British architect behind Tokyo's legendary Rokumeikan. A pastel Western villa fuses with an elegant Japanese residence and a strolling pond garden, preserved almost exactly as built. It's a National Cultural Property, yet still feels like a secret. As inbound travelers trade crowded Kyoto streets for slower, regional escapes, Rokkaen is exactly what people are searching for: uncrowded, photogenic, quietly moving. Standing beneath that turret in the breeze off the Kiso River, I felt real stillness.

Built in 1598 by Hineno Oribe-no-sho Takayoshi, a retainer of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Takashima Castle rose as the proud stronghold of the Suwa clan. Takayoshi chose Takashima, an island-like site on Lake Suwa's shore, once home to a fishing village. He relocated the whole village to build his castle here. When complete, the castle was ringed by lake water and marsh, seeming to float on Lake Suwa itself, earning it the poetic name "Floating Castle of Suwa." In May 1970, the main keep was faithfully rebuilt, again mirroring its graceful form in the moat's waters. Today Takashima Park, home to the keep, is a beloved cherry blossom spot with lovely flowers through every season. Discover 430 years of samurai history at this hidden gem in Nagano, Japan!

NAGOYA'S BEST-KEPT SECRET, HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT
A floodlit castle glowing gold in the night sky. Hundreds of dancers in yukata circling a hand-built cypress tower. Drums echoing off centuries-old walls. This is Nagoya Castle's Bon Odori, and most travelers have never even heard of it.
Every night this August, locals gather under the lit-up keep, dancing to classic Owari tunes and surprise hits. Strangers become friends in seconds, lanterns sway overhead, and the vibe is pure, unfiltered Japan, with barely a tourist in sight.
Nagoya hosts the Asian Games this autumn, and the city is buzzing. Come early and feel Nagoya's heartbeat before the world catches on.

Tokyo's neon and Kyoto's temples steal the postcard spotlight. But ask a night-photography obsessive where Japan's true hidden gem is, and they'll whisper one word: Yokkaichi. On a warm night, step onto a small boat and enter a glowing steel city from another world. Spherical tanks, pipes and smokestacks glow red, green and gold, mirrored on jet-black water. Not an industrial port — drifting through a sci-fi film set. Yokkaichi's "factory nightscape" is quietly becoming a buzzy niche experience, drawing photographers and travelers tired of crowded spots. Inbound visitors crave moments this real, this hidden — and this 60-90 minute cruise from Mie delivers a jaw-dropping surprise most tourists haven't found yet. Go before everyone else catches on.

Step through the door into Matsumoto's living history ✨
Deep in a Nagano forest, moss-covered Jizo statues stand watch at Angu Shrine, said to be founded by the monk Gyoki. Legend says its Kannon statue was later moved to the capital and became Kyoto's Kiyomizu-dera. Once a place of prayer for local silk farmers, its quiet grounds are now watched over by gentle resident cats who seem to heal every visitor 🐾
Nearby, Hotaka Shrine draws hopeful hearts — hundreds of heart-shaped ema plaques sway in the breeze, each carrying a wish for love 💕
Above the old town, Matsumoto Castle stands as it has for centuries: one of only twelve original castle keeps left in Japan, and the country's oldest National Treasure castle 🏯Just 2.5 hrs from Shinjuku by train. Come walk through history with us 🚄

Nagoya's Secret Fortune Shrine: Yamada Tenmangu & Kogane Jinja
In Nagoya's quiet backstreets stands a shrine most visitors never find. I stepped through the stone torii of Yamada Tenmangu, one of Nagoya's Three Great Tenjin shrines, and felt centuries of devotion settle around me. Inside waits a hidden treasure: Kogane Jinja, a rare money-washing shrine where locals rinse coins and lottery tickets in sacred water blessed by Ebisu and Daikoku, praying for fortune. A wall of handwritten thank-you notes from jackpot winners left me speechless.
Nagoya locals know this ritual well, yet almost no overseas visitors have discovered it. That is its magic: authentic local faith, untouched by crowds, where you wash your own coins and feel luck flowing into your hands.
With 2026 seeing more repeat travelers to Japan seeking meaningful, offbeat experiences over famous landmarks, Kogane Jinja is exactly the soulful discovery worth seeking. Come wash away misfortune, and carry Nagoya luck home.

Last year, I met some of the warmest people in Ono City, Fukui — and every visit since has deepened my love for this quiet mountain town. It's the kind of place you could imagine staying in forever.
Few international travelers have found Ono yet. But word is spreading among travelers from Europe and North America, and more are choosing to stay longer — not for sightseeing checklists, but to enjoy the luxury of doing nothing at all. That's the shift happening in Japan travel now: fewer crowded icons, more quiet, meaningful days in places like this.
Recently I watched a few short films capturing Ono's spirit, and I had to share them. Stunning work.
If your travels bring you to Fukui, come find Ono. What you've been searching for may just be here.

This summer, I visited the “KITTE Nagoya Summer Festival” being held at KITTE Nagoya, which is directly connected to Nagoya Station.

This year’s theme is “Yokai × Neon Art.” The space, where traditional Japanese culture blends with fantastical lights, is so beautiful it feels as if you’ve wandered into another world. The vibrantly colored “Hyakuki Yagura” is incredibly photogenic, and as night falls, it’s enveloped in an even more magical atmosphere. Bon odori dances are also held during the festival, allowing you to experience a scene that epitomizes a Japanese summer.

Nagoya is a charming city where you can enjoy not only history and gourmet cuisine but also contemporary art and seasonal events. If you’re looking to create a quintessentially Japanese summer memory, be sure to visit Nagoya. A special, unforgettable experience awaits you.
Access: 1-minute walk from JR Nagoya Station
