Just outside of Nagoya is the Aigi tunnels along the old Meitetsu Hiromi Train line. Aigi stands for a combination of Aichi-Gifu of which the train line ran between.

These tunnels are opened twice a year in spring and autumn where the brilliant green maples and the Forrest reds and golds of fall really set off the walk as you walk the old lines.

At just 16 years old, this apprentice Geisha called a Maiko makes one of her first performances during her training for us at this special event in Miyagawacho Hanamachi.

Kyoto has five Geisha areas. Gion Kobu the largest and most tourist visited and Gion Higashi. Then there is Pontocho with its small long street with narrow alleys. Kamishichiken, the oldest of the five and finally Miyagawacho. All have their unique ways of dance and performance styles.

Join us on a tour of Kyoto and experience the beauty of the Hanamachi with us.

Nagoya is a great place to take in a mix of scenery and one of the best paces is at Shonai Park. It’s a large urban park with a massive rose garden, open fields, bbq area and several ponds. It’s a favorite for locals to visit and spend the day outside and one tourists often don’t get to experience but really should.

One thing we have noticed during our tours is that people’s favorite place or experience in Japan is often not the one they expected before arriving.

Sometimes it is the scent of incense at temples, and then buying some from places like Shoyeido or Kungyokudo to take home as a reminder of their time in Kyoto. For others, it is a smaller shrine or temple that offered a more personal experience than places like Kiyomizudera. And for some, it is trying local foods like Nagoya’s famous miso katsu or tebasaki, or Osaka’s takoyaki.

So we are curious.

For those who have already visited Japan, what place or experience ended up being your favorite, and why?

And for those still planning a trip, what is the one thing you are most looking forward to experiencing?

Interested to see everyone’s answers.

Mother’s Day is a good reminder that travel is not just about places, but about who you share them with.

Over the years, we have guided many families through Japan, and some of the most memorable days are those spent with mothers and their children, whether it is a first trip together or a return visit years later.

Japan offers a unique setting for that. Slowing down in a temple, walking through a neighborhood, or simply taking the time to experience a place properly. These are often the moments that stay with people long after the trip is over.

At Nippon Navigators, we focus on creating days that allow for that kind of experience. Not rushed, not overpacked, but thoughtfully put together so people can actually enjoy where they are and who they are with.

Wherever you are spending it, we wish all mothers a Happy Mother’s Day.

The weather could not have been nicer as we took in the view of Tokyo Skytree from the Sumida River and Asakus. Sumida Park allows for a great walk up towards Matsuchiyama Shoden and its unique Daikon (large white radish) offerings. The daikon is said to represent our minds trapped in a deep ignorance but by offering the daikon to Daisho-Kangi-Ten, the highest deity in esoteric Buddhism, the ignorance and anger associated with it will be purged from the body and soul.
