Incense is famous for sticks and cones, but there are also some spiral-type(coil- type) incense.
The scent repertoire is narrowed, but it is characterized by many attractive scents.
This time, we will introduce the recommended coil incense from incense maker “Kunmeido” in Osaka Sakai famous as “Reiryokoh incense”.

The most famous is “Tsukimachigumo”.
It is used in restaurants and inns, and it is so popular that entertainers introduce it on TV.
A unique sweet scent based on sandalwood spreads.
Tsukimachigumo is so popular that many customers visit to buy this.

The next, Kansui is coils incense made from sandalwood-based incense with a fragrance imaged by a lily flower.
Because there are few stores selling this product, it is an unusual product that you can hardly find anywhere else.
The other day, a customer who opened a Japanese restaurant bought it because he wanted to use it at the entrance.

There are 4 types of “Tsukinowa”, each of which is imaged by the scent of flowers.
The color of the incense varies depending on the scent of violet (red), jasmine (yellow), rose (light blue), and lily (dark blue).
Coil-type incense has a long burning time of about 1 to 2 hours, making it ideal for large rooms and places with a lot of air flow.

The other day, I visited Tokyo Ueno Ameyoko Shopping Street near our store!

I walked Ueno Onshi Park southward and went to Ameyoko.
Ameyoko is the narrow maze of cheap eats and stalls selling everything from fresh fish to vintage watches,
and a booming mini-Koreatown.
There are many Asian food and restaurants such as Thailand and Vietnam.

I went to Ueno Ameyoko for the first time and it was very lively!
There were many restaurants and I was at a loss while enjoying where to eat.
There are many also Izakaya and Sushi and it is a good place to drink Sake.
However, I was totally tired of walking a lot…
Since there are too many stores, I couldn’t decide right away.
After all, I ate rice at a 500 yen pizzeria.

On the way back, I walked in Shinobazu Pond.
I also passed by Ueno Zoo.
I don’t see the animals because it was night, but they voice and smelled.

Ameyoko was so much fun that I want to go again!
When you come to sightseeing in Tokyo, please play in Ueno.

The second photos is the town that has gone through Ueno Onshi Park.
There is Ameyoko Shopping Street turn around the corner.

This is a Kyoyaki, Kiyomizu ware incense burner depicting "Choju-giga (Wildlife caricature)".
Enjoying your favorite scent in your favorite incense burner is also exceptional.

Choju-giga seem to have been made during the late Heian period and the Kamakura period.
They are caricatures of people's lives and social conditions at that time and are divided into four stories.

This incense burner is fun just to watch!
On the front is a Frog and rabbit playing Sumo, and on the back is a monkey looking at the situation.

The inside of the incense burner is wide, so you can use any incense.
Please visit Kohgen Ueno Sakuragi store if you are interested!

The other day, we held a lecture on incense making experience as a curriculum for international students studying Japanese.

This time, we made incense sticks.
14 students participated and it was very lively from start to finish!

In the process of mixing agarwood and Incense Ingredients one by one, I heard voices at here and there tables saying “The aroma is getting stronger!”
The teachers also enjoyed the scent mixed with the students and enjoyed the experience.

Finish mixing all ingredients and go to the molding process.
In addition to stick type, cone type and coil type, they made dumpling type, flower type, school initials and other unique shapes.
It was very interesting to go around the tables.
There was also a voice saying `` It's a waste to use '' lol

Kohgen has an incense making experience at the store.
It is done at the following three stores.

Kohgen holds a handmade incense experience on the store.

You can choose your favorite incense from three types of “Fragrant Sachet” that has been handed down since the Nara period(about 1200 years ago), “Kneaded incense” that has been used by nobles in the Heian period(about 1000 years ago),“Incense stick” that are still popular today.

It is exceptional good that you can use your own handmade incense or wear it in your clothes.

Japanese Incense has a long history.
When you mix and make up while checking the scent of the incense ingredients,
It feels as if you were back in time in the Nara and Heian periods.

I also liked various “handmade experiences”, and I often went around the classroom with one person and friends.
(Ceramics, watches, shakuhachi, etc. were all fun!)

We look forward to your visit!

A museum is open in Kohgen Ueno Sakuragi store.

Kohgen have been collecting and accumulating rare Agarwood(fragrant wood) worldwide over the years.
In the museum, a part of the Agarwood(fragrant wood) is displayed.

Agarwood is the oldest incense ingredient in Japan.
In “Nihonshoki”, there is a description that agarwood drifted to Awaji Island in 1993.

Aristocrats and Samurai also enjoyed the noble scent and permeated it as part of the culture.
It is said that Ieyasu Tokugawa was also fascinated by the charm of agarwood and traded it.

Oda Nobunaga is also said to have liked very much.
How about you see it while feeling the history of Japan?

Open the museum at Kohgen Ueno Sakuragi store.
I was given a collection of valuable incense and tea utensils
from a restaurant that has been operating for over 200 years.
We hope that many people will see the rare,
historically high value collection and broaden the incense culture.
【incense pillows(kohmakura)/Genroku era】
In the past, incense pillows(kohmakura) were used to put incense burners in pillows
to burn incense and to add scent to hair.
This was used in the Genroku era.
【Fragrant Woods cracker(kohwaridougu)/Genroku era】
It is a tool to cut the fragrant wood into small pieces.

In addition to incense implements from the Edo period,
we also display tools and notes that you rarely see often, such as the ten incense boxes of the Shino style,
one of the kohdo(traditional incense-smelling ceremony), and handbooks.

It is a rare opportunity, so please come and see us when you come to Japan.

Frankincense is very historical and sacred.
For those who want to enjoy the scent of the Frankincense, there is an incense stick made mainly of Frankincense!

A long-established maker of incense, Tennendo is making it.
Blended with several incense ingredients based on Frankincense, the scent was renewed in 2009.
It is a recommended scent for those who want to use Frankincense for the first time.

The incense package is designed with an ancient Egyptian mural said to have been painted 4000 years ago.
The mural is painted with a king who dedicates Frankincense to God, and you can feel on the history from ancient Egypt.

In addition, the incense of this frankincense, there is a “Frankincense pure” to enjoy the pure scent of the Frankincense more natural!

Sacred incense ingredients that have recently been attracting attention~Frankincense~

Do you know Frankincense?
Frankincense that another name is Oribanamu, which is a resin of tropical evergreen shrubs of Burseraceae Boswellia.
By the way, Oribanamu seems to represent "milk" in Arabic.

The origin of frankincense means "true scent" in French.
【Frank (true) + Incense (scent) → Frankincense】

Why is it a true scent ... This origin goes back to the ancient Egyptian civilization.
The origin of incense culture is said to be Egyptian civilization 5000 years ago.

In The Old Testament, there is a statement that three kinds of frankincense, golden and myrrh were given as celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.
Of the three, it is said that frankincense means the priesthood.
So it has been revered by the people as sacred.

It is said that the resin of frankincense was put on the charcoal, and the smoke was emitted.

Have you ever seen scene of a priest holding a incense burner with smoke in the church?
The contents of that are burning frankincense.
It is still inherited as a sacred scent at the church even today.

Frankincense is origin mainly Oman and Somalia in the Middle East.
In particular, Omani's frankincense is the highest grade and popular.
In Oman, there is a "land of frankincense" where the incense trees spread like a field.
And it is registered as a World Heritage.

The smell is a slightly sweet smell with a refreshing feeling.
I personally feel the refreshing feeling like watermelon and the smell that woody sweetness melted together.
Many customers are attracted to the mysterious warm smell.

It is a scent that Cleopatra and Queen Shiva loved.
Therefore, it is good to enjoy the scent while thinking about the history of ancient civilization.

We prepare high quality Omani's frankincense(30g, 50g).

It is an incense body powder that mixed a sandal wood and several kinds of herbs.
This incense was born in India, to help people living in sweaty and hot lands get rid of body odor.
It is the beginning that I applied the perfume which I got from the scented wood on my body.
From there, it has been developed as a cleansing aspect of
“cleansing the mind and body” and “paying evil and keeping away from it”,
and it has been adopted in Buddhism.
In Japan, since long ago, incense body powder has been used when it is difficult to clean hands with water,
such as when entering a temple in the middle of a mountain where it is difficult to draw water,
or before making a handwritten copy of a sutra.
Now, it is easy for the general public, as well as the monks and worshipers,
It is popular as an incense that does not use fire.
It is recommended when visiting the temple for sightseeing.
How about using the deep scent of Japan to clean your mind and body?
