Ryuogabuchi Pond sits on the slopes of Mt. Nukaidake, also called Yamato Fuji, at 530 meters above sea level. This natural reservoir gathers water from local springs and streams. Trees and reeds line the shore, enclosing the pond and creating a quiet, undisturbed setting.
On clear, still mornings, the pond’s surface reflects the trees and sky with striking clarity. The effect is a near-perfect mirror, lending the area a calm and contemplative atmosphere.

A walking path encircles the pond, measuring 150 meters east to west and 100 meters north to south. It’s a favored route for a gentle stroll. Some sections can be marshy, so comfortable footwear is recommended.

Mimuro Shiratamaya Eiju

For almost 180 years, this esteemed confectionery has been crafting monaka sweets—fragile, melt-in-the-mouth wafer shells enfolding red bean paste. The principal store, located right next to the giant main torii gate of Omiwa-jinja Shrine, boasts a simple tea shop offering a tranquil view of the garden.

The specialty known as “Mimuro” was conceived by the inaugural generation of Shiratamaya Eiju, during the Koka era (1844-1848). The manufacturing techniques have remained untouched through the following 7 generations solidifying their reputation for producing monaka sweets made with the highest-quality aromatic azuki beans and freshly baked glutinous rice.

Naramachi Karakuri Omochakan is a small museum in a historic townhouse, dedicated to traditional Japanese mechanical toys. Visitors are encouraged to handle and play with the exhibits—no screens, just gravity, pulleys, and momentum. The house itself is an Edo-period relic, with original wooden shutters, concealed staircases, and a tea room decorated with period art.

Most toys date back to the Edo period (1603–1868), crafted from wood, bamboo, and handmade paper. The displays rotate every two months, drawn from a collection of around 600 pieces restored and donated by a former Nara University professor.

Workshops are held monthly for those interested in making their own karakuri toys. While English guidance is limited, the hands-on nature of the exhibits makes them accessible to all ages. Admission is free.

Farm Nishikawa Gelato

Farm Nishikawa is a small family owned farm on the outskirts of Kashihara city that sells their own gelato - hand made on site from their own fruits. Farm Nishikawa is primarily a strawberry farm focused on cultivating and selling Nara’s famed strawberry brands, “Kotoka” and “Asuka Ruby.”

Their gelato has also been recognized as an official brand of Kashihara city and is available at Kintetsu department store and via their own online store.

There are also many customers that visit Farm Nishikawa that live outside of Nara prefecture, especially those stopping by on motor cycle tours.

Things To Do in Nara - July 2025 Events

July is one of the busiest event months in Nara, with many a good reason to head out into the Nara countryside. The month starts with an outdoor dance festival for nature ravers in south Nara.

Later in the month, there are a number of local festivals, including spectacular fireworks in Nosegawa Village. Yoshino hosts one of its more unique events, a frog hopping festival, and Shinto summer festivals liven up country areas in Ikaruga, Sakurai and Gose. If you want to hang nearer to Nara City, read about the ‘Nara Lotus Road’ and where to view these impressive flowers.

Sakafune-ishi Stone

Japan has recently nominated the ancient capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara in Nara Prefecture for UNESCO World Heritage status, targeting inscription in 2026. The proposal includes 19 sites—ruins of imperial palaces and burial mounds—that reflect the origins of Japan’s first centralized government. UNESCO will conduct an on-site survey this fall, with a final decision expected in summer 2026. If approved, this recognition would further establish Nara’s significance as a destination for heritage tourism.

Sakafune-ishi is one of several monolithic stones located in Asuka and undoubtedly the most mysterious. This granite slab, with its impressive dimensions of 5.5 meters in length, up to 2.3 meters in width, and 1 meter in thickness, is marked by a series of circular dents and grooves on its upper surface.

The stone’s name, which translates to “Sake Ship Stone,” hints at a possible use in ancient sake brewing or related ceremonial practices, yet no definitive evidence has confirmed this theory.
