Akishino-dera Temple

Founded in the late eighth century, Akishino-dera is a subdued temple with a National Treasure main hall and a long reputation for calm rather than spectacle. It is especially famous for the graceful Gigeiten statue and for grounds softened by moss and trees, which give the site its distinct hush.

Moss Garden of Akishino-dera Temple

Akishino-dera is easy to reach from Yamato-Saidaiji Station by bus, or on foot in about 20 minutes. The temple’s quiet appeal lies in its moss garden, wooded setting, and elegant main hall, a fine example of the Wayo architectural style with its gently sloping roof and earthen floor.
Among its 25 Buddhist statues, the most admired is Gigeiten, patron deity of the arts. Its head dates to the eighth century and its body to the thirteenth, yet the two are joined with remarkable harmony, earning the statue designation as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

Saidai-ji Temple.

Founded in 765 by Empress Shotoku, Saidai-ji was once one of the great state temples of ancient Nara and stood as a western counterpart to Todai-ji.

Toshodai-ji Temple
Founded in 759 by the influential Chinese priest Ganjin, Toshodaiji was established to reform Japanese Buddhism and serve as a vital center for training new clergy. Due to its profound historical and architectural significance, the temple was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1998 as part of the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara.
