Gango-ji Temple
Originally transferred to Nara from Asuka-dera when the capital moved to Heijo-kyo, Gango-ji stands among the oldest foundations of Japanese Buddhism and remains a World Heritage site with more than 1,300 years of history.

Set in the heart of Naramachi, it has a quieter presence than Nara’s larger temple complexes, with surviving halls and treasures that hint at the scale it once possessed.
