Onomichi Rental Cycle Terminal Relocation & TEMPORARY CLOSURE🙏

Our rental cycle terminal in Onomichi is moving to a new home!

From October 1, our Onomichi Rental Cycle Terminal will be located next to Onomichi JR Station. During the transfer, it will not be possible to rent bikes from the Onomichi Terminal.

Dates affected:
All day September 29
All day September 30
Until 12 pm October 1

There is another terminal relatively nearby on Mukaishima Island, but the selection of bicycles is limited.

We would advise considering starting your ride from Imabari and finishing in Onomichi (it is possible to drop off your bikes at this time).

Another alternative is to take the ferry from Onomichi to Setoda and pick up your bikes from there.

Head to Onomichi for Shimanami’s biggest fireworks festival of the year🎇

On August 2, 13,000 fireworks will light up the sky as they explode above the Onomichi Channel that separates the historic port town from Mukaishima Island to the delight of the thousands of people who take in the hour-long show from the waterfront🎉

This fireworks festival always attracts huge crowds, so please be prepared for that and plan your travel accordingly.

Around 5000 viewing points along the waterfront have been sold to locals and visitors to help fund the event, so hunting a good viewing spot is all part of the experience.

💡TIP💡
The festival is named for Sumiyoshi Shrine which is located in front of Onomichi Station and, if you arrive early, you can catch the arrival of three lantern strewn boats arriving at the shrine and the parade carrying a portable shrine through the streets of Onomichi (14:00-16:30).

Catch the early morning breeze on the Shimanami Kaido✨

It is pretty warm here in Shimanami right now☀️

With the sun rising just after 5 am, early birds, however, can catch cooler temperatures and refreshing breezes before the heat of the day🪭

It is also the perfect time of day to enjoy the Shimanami Blue hues of both sea and sky💙

Island hopping by ferry returns to the Shimanami Kaido for the first time in 26 years!

One of the things we get asked over and over again is, “Why is there no ferry service between Onomichi and Imabari that stops off at the islands of the Shimanami Kaido along the way?”

There hasn’t been a boat service between the two ends of the Shimanami Kaido bike route since 1999. This autumn, however, for the first time in 26 years, passengers will be able to make the journey by boat for 9 days.

Four passes will be available, which can be used as often as you like over a two-day period, allowing you to stop off along the way.

Two vessels will be used; Cycle Ship Lazuli, which has a nice deck and ample space for transporting bikes, and the Citrus, which is an enclosed vessel with some space for bikes.

This is a short pilot scheme, and the reservation system looks daunting, but we hope that this is the first step towards island hopping across the Shimanami Kaido becoming possible by boat as well as by bicycle!

Beat the heat and boost your energy with this traditional summer treat🍧

The Shimanami Kaido is generally a pretty flat bike route, except for where it is not…

Keep it to yourself, but one of our dirty little secrets is that getting up to its famous bridges from sea level does involve some climbing. Well, how else are you going to get those fantastic views?

Especially during the hot summer season, we recommend taking a little breather before the approach to each bridge, to fuel and hydrate.

At the base of the Ikuchijima Bridge on the Innoshima Island side, we recommend a stop at Cafe Terrace Na-no-hana.

Here, as well as light meals and drinks, you can enjoy a refreshingly cool bowl of “kaki-gori” shaved ice while enjoying great views of the bridge, either from the terrace or from inside the air-conditioned cafe.

The shaved ice pictured is topped with yummy local citrus fruit. What’s your favorite shaved ice flavor🌈?

Have you ever dreamed of having Miyajima to yourself? ⛩️

While THAT is unlikely to happen, you can come pretty close at the UNESCO World Heritage Site's namesake shrine, just a short distance from the Shimanami Kaido's main Blue Line route.

Itsukushima Shrine on Iwashi Island, just off the coast of Mukaishima Island, is often deserted, though in the summer season it is a popular local swim spot, so don't forget to pack your swimmers🏊🏝️

Shimanami beach season is here🏖️

While many visitors from overseas would happily enjoy a dip in the Shimanami Blue waters along the Shimanami Kaido from May through to autumn, most of Japan’s beaches and designated swim spots son’t officially open until mid to late July.

With the opening of the beaches, called "umi-biraki” in Japanese, come access to coin-operated showers, access to shady gazebos, and "umi-no-ie” beach huts that offer tasty meals, snack and refreshing drinks, as well as beach paraphernalia to rent or buy.

Sunset Beach is perfectly situated about halfway along the Shimanami Kaido just south of the charming port town of Setoda. Break up your ride along the full route with a cooling dip or stay in Setoda overnight to enjoy the beach and famous sunsets to the full. Be sure to look out for the various art objet that are dotted around the beach park and along the route.

Sunset Beach is just 3 km south of Setoda Port. Ferries between Onomichi and Setoda make the journey in less than an hour, and there is a shared bike and pedestrian path that is separated from the main road almost all the way to the beach. It’s a lovely stretch of coastline and is a great way to get a sample of the Shimanami Kaido for those unable to explore the full route.

Gion Festival is one of Onomichi's most energetic festivals, and ity is THIS weekend⛩🎉

Onomichi’s annual Gion Festival is one of the port town’s oldest and most vibrant events.

Like its famous namesake in Kyoto, the festival’s origins can be traced to calling on the deity of disease and healing, Gion Tenno, in times of pestilence.

Representatives of three local neighborhoods depart Yasaka Shrine with portable shrines and make their way along the covered shopping arcades and through the streets of Onomichi, stopping in front of local businesses and chanting as they go.

Eventually, the three teams converge in the open space in front of Tsuchido pier, where, after an awesome Japanese drum performance, they engage in a trial of speed and teamwork, racing around a tall pole with the portable, but very heavy, shrines.

The local rivalry is palpable. The strain is visible on the men’s faces, and those unable to keep up are sent flying off the back of the group into the watching crowds. But once the content has been decided, and the fleetest of foot crowned, all three shrines lock onto the pole and the teams make a final circuit, this time in unison as Onomichi becomes one.

The Gion Festival starts at 6 pm and the speed contests are held between 8 pm and 9 pm. Onomichi’s Saturday NIght Market is also held at the same time so it’s a great night to be in town if you can make it!
