🌟 What Is Kobe Luminarie?
Kobe Luminarie is one of Japan’s most iconic winter illuminations, first held in December 1995 shortly after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake struck on January 17 of that year.
✨ Purpose & Meaning:
☘︎It was created as a tribute to the earthquake’s victims and as a symbol of hope, recovery, and resilience for Kobe’s citizens.
☘︎“Luminarie” refers to illuminations — inspired by Italian light festivals — and the event has become an annual tradition that draws visitors from all over the world.
For many visitors, this light festival is not just a spectacle but also a deeply meaningful cultural experience that commemorates tragedy and celebrates the city’s strength and spirit.
✨ Highlights of 2026
The 31st Kobe Luminarie carries the theme:
🎇 “Kobe’s Pulse, Story of Light” — offering light art installations that visitors walk through and enjoy throughout the city.
💡 Featured works include:
☆Galleria & Frontone — beautiful large illuminated arches and corridors (in Meriken Park’s paid zone).
☆Spalliera — large light wall in Higashi Yuenchi.
☆Various installations along the Former Foreign Settlement, blending lights with historic city streets.
Many smaller light pieces are also set up so you can walk around Kobe and enjoy light art intertwined with the city’s atmosphere.
🗓 Event Period & Hours
📅 January 30 – February 8, 2026 (10 days)
🕯️ Lighting starts from dusk until around 21:30 each evening.
