No.98 東海道水口宿

No.98 Tokaido Minakuchi-juku
Hi there! I'm a Tanuki who absolutely loves cycling and Shiga Prefecture!
Back in the day, the Old Tokaido Road was dotted with "Post Towns" (Shukuba-machi) that served as vital hubs for lodging, food, and logistics. In Shiga, we have five of these historic gems: Otsu, Kusatsu, Ishibe, Minakuchi, and Tsuchiyama. Even now, you can still feel the ancient atmosphere through the preserved streetscapes, the winding roads, and traditional local festivals.
Minakuchi-juku flourished as the castle town for Minakuchi Okayama Castle during the era of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It’s famously known as the "Town of Three Streets" (Misuji-no-machi) because the town layout is built around three main parallel roads.
Every April, the city comes alive with the , where 16 magnificent Hikiyama (festival floats) parade through the streets. It's a sight to see!
