It’s the start of cherry blossom season here in Hokkaido and we’re thinking about our favorite spots 🌸

Moerenuma Park in Sapporo, Toda Memorial Park to the north of the city and Sobetsu Park at Lake Toya (which is actually plum blossom) top our list.

Where’s your favorite place to BBQ under the cherry blossom this spring?

We love East Hokkaido, and we specifically love to visit Teshikaga area (that includes Lake Kussharo, Lake Mashu, Mount Io, and more) lots in every season 😍

Snowshoeing at Lake Mashu and taking pictures of the swans at Sunayu in winter - through to enjoying local hiking trails in summer - through to outdoor onsens and camping under the changing leaves in early autumn - so many great memories and things to look forward too.

Teshikaga area recently redid their website so that it’s now really easy for travelers to get up to date and accurate information, and you can check this out at https://visit-teshikaga.com/en/

Let’s travel Hokkaido together 🤗

My final collection of pictures from our experiences with the team at 🥰

There were two other great elements to our time in Lake Akan which I want to highlight: embroidery and wood carving. In both of these workshops, the focus is learning about Ainu patterns - which are often inspired and based on the forms and shapes found in nature.

Although I paint and felt a bit of familiarity with wood craft, embroidery is something that has always been way out of my comfort zone. But I love the Ainu designs that you see displayed on clothing and jewelry throughout Hokkaido, and our teacher Nishida-san was one of the most patient and guiding people I’ve ever met. It felt like a real achievement when we could create a simple design for ourselves - despite us crying ‘help us sensei!’ every few minutes! 😂

We’re all really hoping that international travel is going to become a bit more accessible in 2022, and I really hope you consider adding Lake Akan to your itinerary. It’s one of our favorite spots in all seasons.

Mukkuri making with 💪🥰

Have you ever seen or heard this small instrument? It’s called a Mukkuri and it’s a plucked mouth harp indigenous to Hokkaido’s Ainu people.

It’s made from bamboo and the sound is made by pulling the string and vibrating the reed against your mouth…. And it’s A LOT harder than it looks! The sound is so unique, and you can really appreciate how Ainu music expresses the sounds of nature, and is so distinct from anything else you might have heard.

I’ve been visiting Lake Akan for a number of years now, so I’ve heard mukkuri performances, but this was my first attempt at crafting and playing for myself… It gives you a whole new respect for the Ainu musicians who share their songs with you.

The last couple of days we’ve been in Lake Akan area taking part in some amazing Ainu cultural experiences with the team at Anytime Ainutime.

I’ll be sharing a bit more about this over the next few posts, but to begin, let me share the stunning autumn views of Lake Akan, which I think explain for themselves why it should be a must on your Hokkaido fall travel list! 🤤😍

We did a forest hike with Ainu guide Takiguchi-san (who speaks amazing English too), and I was really moved by the knowledge he shared and the love and sense of balance he had for guiding in the forest. Definitely a wonderful way to get a deeper appreciation for the area outside of the regular tourist check-list! 🍂😊
