Furano and Biei are entering their most bedazzling time of year as flowers blooms in succession into October. The melons are impossibly sweet now too.

Exhilarating views atop the summit and along the crater rim of Lake Mashu & Mt. Kamui make this day hike one of our most popular intermediate level day hikes.

Taking anywhere from 5-7 hours, views along the hike extend down to Lake Mashu - one of Japan’s clearest lakes - and out to the Akan volcanic cluster, including the steaming Mt. Meakan.

Commonly viewed wildlife include deer, foxes, kites, white-tailed eagles, and a variety of other birds.

As Mt. Kamui is a dormant volcano, it’s also a perfect alternative to Mt. Meakan when the latter becomes more active, as is currently the case.

And of course, a hiking day would be incomplete without a long soak at a beautiful onsen.

Would you intervene to try to save this baby deer?

The reality is that when humans interact with baby deer, their smell stays on the deer, and the mother will often reject her own baby if she doesn’t recognize her/his smell.

In such cases, the deer must be either adopted and raised by humans, or else better left alone to risk the wilderness in hopes of reuniting with its momma.

With an overpopulation of deer in Hokkaido, it’s unlikely that any human intervention would occur regardless of the state of the baby. It’s the harsh reality of our island which is teeming with wildlife.

While this might seem heartless, this is how nature keeps its balance.

The ritual is relaxing and contemplative, the matcha bitter and the snack sweet.

Tulips and moss phlox festivals in full bloom in Eastern Hokkaido, in Kamiyubetsu and Higashimokoto respectively.

While the tulips appear flawless, the moss phlox in Higashimokoto is blemished due to an unfortunate insect infestation that continues to spread and affect the flowering hillside. Hopefully the site can be returned to its original glory soon.

Both festivals go until early June and are worth visiting if you’re visiting the East.

Unbelievable day at Shiretoko Peninsula, Hokkaido’s only UNESCO W.H. site.

We spotted dozens of Steller’s Sea Lions and 6 Higuma brown bears from our sea cruise with a local fisherman.

We also visited the famed 5 Lakes area in the park, which is hallowed ground for nature lovers 💯
