Unbelievable day at Shiretoko Peninsula, Hokkaido’s only UNESCO W.H. site.

We spotted dozens of Steller’s Sea Lions and 6 Higuma brown bears from our sea cruise with a local fisherman.

We also visited the famed 5 Lakes area in the park, which is hallowed ground for nature lovers 💯

For those interested in indigenous cultures, Hokkaido has a number of museums and tourist villages worth exploring.

At the top of the list is Shiraoi’s Upopoy National Ainu Museum, which would take a few days to fully experience!

Other notable Ainu museums are located in Sapporo, Biratori, Asahikawa, Lake Akan, Lake Kussharo and more.

Some museums also offer experience workshops to make Ainu embroidery, mukkuri bamboo mouth harps, woodcarving and more.

As winter slowly slips away, we give our thanks to this wonderland called Hokkaido, which experiences one of Earth’s miracles every year as meters of snow drift down from the skies.

Meanwhile, another miracle awaits as tiny buds begin to grow, the year’s first shoots spring upwards, and soon cherry blossoms will grace roadsides, parks and mountain vistas.

Whether one is a fan of winter or not, Hokkaido is truly a 4-season destination.

One visit can never be enough; perhaps one life isn’t enough either!

For many wildlife photographers, capturing the Steller’s Sea Eagles amidst the drift ice at Rausu in Shiretoko N.P. is an absolute peak experience.

We were blessed with incredible conditions on a recent private custom-made photography tour to Eastern Hokkaido.

The eagles migrate annually from Siberia and Eastern Russia for mating and feeding, before returning northward at winter’s end for laying eggs and raising their chicks.

Hokkaido never ceases to amaze, and goosebumps are as common as the winter winds.

Bucket-list!!

Hot air ballooning is one of Hokkaido's most incredible winter activities. It brings "breathtaking" to a whole new level!

Flights are around 30 minutes long - and often longer if the landing zones, which are snowy farmer's fields - take longer to reach.

The operators are highly trained and the equipment expertly managed.

This activity is suitable for all ages, although seniors may have a bit of trouble getting into & out of the baskets.

When the weather is just right, we can also witness the so-called "diamond dust", which is crystalized snow/ice which hovers in the atmosphere and created a bedazzling, shimmering effect.

Prepare to be blown away!!

Thank you to our guest for the wonderful photos!

The ice festival season in Hokkaido is coming to an end, sadly.

One of our local favorite’s is Lake Shikotsu’s impressive ice festival, where lake water is sprayed onto temporary structures to create a surreal ice scape.

Looking forward to next winter already!

The greatest wildlife comeback story in Japan’s history couldn’t have happened to a more noble creature: The Tancho Crane.

Once sport hunted and facing catastrophic habitat loss due to farming expansion in Eastern Hokkaido, local villagers started feeding the cranes during the lean winter months.

After a few years of successful feeding, with the cranes returning daily for their meal of rice and corn grains, the government took over and built today’s feeding centers.

The most famous of these is the Akan International Crane Center, which doubles as a museum and conservation center.

Today, the cranes continue to thrive and have reached their population density maximum for their remaining habitat at Kushiro Marshland. They are no longer endangered.

Their powerful story is a reminder that it’s the locals who have the most to gain - and are usually the first to implement solutions - when the local environment is threatened.

It was the people of Kushiro Marshland who saved the cranes, highlighting the importance of empowering local communities to manage their own lives.

Fun fact: Japan is home to a dozen crane species, making our archipelago the most diverse crane habitat of any country in the world.

Dog sledding. Bucket list activity. Unforgettable.

It’s been a great season for mushing with the consistently cold temps and frequent snow top-ups.

The pups are eager, the air dry, the adrenaline pumps.

See Hokkaido rush past as a gaggle of dogs tugs feverishly on the lines. It’s exciting, yet quite safe at the same time.

The only problem: very limited availability.

For 2026-27 winter dog sled bookings, please contact us from late August! By December half the slots are booked, and by January the operators have only a few slots left.

Let’s mush!!

Lake Shikotsu, part of the Toya-Shikotsu National Park, is a remarkable lake just 1 hour from Sapporo.

- It’s Japan’s northernmost lake that does not freezes in winter. Why? It’s extremely deep.

- It’s said to have masculine energy contrasting the feminine energy of nearby Lake Toya

- Sources indicate that the indigenous Ainu people believe Lake Shikotsu was haunted with spirits living in the deep below. To this day, people drown at Lake Shikotsu due to down currents, waves and high winds.

- It’s famous for Kokane, a rare type of gourmet salmon stocked and harvested at Lake Shikotsu. Kokane can be purchased at a number of lakeside restaurants.

- The Nature Center has an informative documentary that is well-worth watching. Played on demand in a variety of languages, so ask any of the staff members for help

And of course, the currently active Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival! This small lakeside festival is a perfect complement to Sapporo’s massive size festival and epic crowds!

“Snowflakes are letters sent from heaven” are the famous words of Nakaya Ukichiro, the Japanese physicist who discovered how snow is formed through its passage in the atmosphere.

He is also credited with creating the world’s first artificial snow in 1936.

In a true Hokkaido pioneer spirit, Nakaya San was born on the main island of Honshu but spent the second part of his life living in Hokkaido studying snow.

He discovered that snowflakes are formed as they pass through different layers in the atmosphere - and not all at once - which creates a unique snowflake every single time.

Each snowflake has its own journey, accumulating layers as it floats down from heaven to earth. Remarkable!

Undoubtedly, Nakaya San would have marveled at these modern-day images, which capture snowflakes in crystal-clear resolution.

A great place to learn more about Nakaya San’s work is at the Asahidake Visitors Center in Daisetsuzan N.P. through a short yet informative documentary film shown on demand at no charge.
