Izumi Citizens Festival, one of the biggest summer events in Izumi Ward, will be held on August 22. Starting at 1:00 pm, the festival will feature a wide variety of exciting attractions, such as lantern making, super ball scooping, a police car display, and stage performances. The Hirose River Lantern Floating is a traditional event in Sendai that is said to have been started by Kanshin-in, the wife of Date Shigemura, the 7th lord of the Date clan, to honor and comfort the souls of the departed. Beautiful lanterns bearing people’s wishes and prayers gently float down the Hirose River. Anyone can float a lantern on the river for a fee. A lantern ticket is required to float a lantern. Come and experience this moving tradition, where you can remember your ancestors and loved ones and pray for happiness in the future. For more information, please visit the official website.

Arahama is a seaside area that was severely affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami in 2011, which claimed many lives. Every year, countless beautiful lanterns, each carrying heartfelt prayers and wishes, are set afloat on the Teizan Canal. After the lanterns are set afloat, fireworks light up the night sky in memory of those who lost their lives in the disaster. If you would like to float a lantern, please visit the Ruins of the Great East Japan Earthquake Sendai Arahama Elementary School to register by 5:00 p.m. on August 15.
