Maghe Sankranti, also known as Makar Sankranti, marks the beginning of month in mid January when the sun moves back to the Northern Hemisphere especially observed with great fanfare by different communities of Nepal. To protect the body from cold, people eat ghee, chaku (jaggery), nuts and tubers such as yam and sweet potato to keep themselves warm.

The communities in south-west Nepal celebrate the day as Maghi, the year's biggest festival that entails long due family reunions, sumptuous traditional meals, community engagements and cultural events.
