What’s it like to enter a zen monastery and become a monk?

made these beautiful illustrations to bring to life our guest this month, Ian’s, experience.

It involves three days of humbling yourself at the temple’s doorstep, crying out as loud as you can to be admitted and then another five of seated, silent, meditation in front of the other monks. Not to mention an understanding of the Japanese language and a voucher to write you a letter of recommendation. No small feat.
