A new report from the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) and Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative makes the case that reducing military expenditure is the way to finance a just global transition away from fossil fuels.

Following the release of new figures from the Stockholm Institute for Peace Research showing global military spending has increased for the 11th consecutive year, reaching nearly $2.9 trillion, an event was held onboard Peace Boat’s 123rd Global Voyage to reflect on its growing impacts.

Peace Boat’s International Director, Remy Millot, shared key insights from SIPRI and the Global Days of Action on Military Spending ( ), including the world’s top military spenders.

The session also explored the UN Secretary-General’s report on how rising military spending is undermining progress on the Sustainable Development Goals.

To highlight that this is not just about budgets, but about priorities and values, participants worked in groups to reimagine how $2.88 trillion could instead be invested in people, communities, and climate solutions.

First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels has just wrapped up in Santa Marta 🌍

Peace Boat was proud to work with partners to highlight a critical but often overlooked issue: the deep connections between fossil fuels and militarism. We cannot end our dependence on fossil fuels without also transforming the systems that sustain them. Extractivism and militarism are intertwined, prioritising violence, control, and profit over care, justice, and community.

A powerful event brought together powerful voices from around the world to explore, from a feminist perspective, why demilitarisation is essential to a just transition, and how shifting resources from war to climate solutions is key to building a peaceful and sustainable future.

The event addressed military emissions, ever-increasing military spending, the Fossil Fuel Treaty as a peace framework, the impacts of militarised extractivism in Colombia and the Philippines, and how fossil fuels are fueling the genocide in Palestine. It also highlighted urgent calls for justice, including the role of energy systems in ongoing conflicts and the risks faced by environmental defenders, including those killed only days ago in Toboso, Negros Occidental.

The event was supported by the Heinrich Boll Foundation Bogota and co-organized by Peace Boat, the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative, The Conflict and Environment Observatory , Liga Internacional de Mujeres por la paz y la libertad-LIMPAL Colombia , the Global Energy Embargo for Palestine, the International League of Peoples' Struggle and Women's Environment and Development Organization (WEDO)

Peace Boat is participating in the First Conference on the Transition Away from Fossil Fuels in Santa Marta, alongside many movements and partners working for climate justice, peace, and a just transition.

Today, there will be a link-up between activists in Santa Marta and those in New York at the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), "Prospects for a Nuclear and Fossil Free Future", reflecting on the connections between a fossil-free future and a nuclear-free future.

Climate justice and disarmament are deeply connected — a just and sustainable future requires both a transition away from fossil fuels and a move away from militarism and nuclear threats.

Tomorrow, the side event “Fossil Fuels, Militarism, and the Path to Peace: A Feminist Just Transition” will look more deeply at the links between demilitarisation and a just transition, including the launch of the new report from WILPF and the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative, “The double dividend: how reducing military spending can finance a just transition.”
In-person participation is already at capacity, but online participation is still open here:

Figures released today by SIPRI show that world military expenditure rose by 2.9% in real terms to reach USD 2,887 billion in 2025.

This marks the 11th consecutive year of growth in global military spending.

Over the past decade alone (2016–2025), global military spending has increased by 41%.

At a time of escalating climate crisis, deepening inequality, and urgent social needs, governments continue to prioritise militarism over people and planet.

Imagine what USD 2.887 trillion could do if invested instead in healthcare, education, climate action, peacebuilding, and a just transition.

Demilitarisation is not only a peace issue — it is also a climate and justice issue.

Join the Global Days of Action on Military Spending (GDAMS) and help amplify the message using the new SIPRI infographics:

Peace Boat is at the First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels in Santa Marta, Colombia, as part of the Women and Gender sector, raising the need for a feminist just transition rooted in peace, justice, and care.

A just transition cannot ignore militarism. Militaries are among the world’s largest institutional users of fossil fuels and major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. Rising military spending means more weapons production, more military operations, and more fossil fuel use, while resources are diverted away from climate justice, public services, and community resilience. Demilitarisation must be part of the conversation if we are serious about transitioning away from fossil fuels.

We are also challenging extractive false solutions that deepen harm instead of addressing the root causes of the climate crisis. Nuclear energy is one of them. It is built on extractivism, harms frontline communities, and cannot be separated from the systems of militarism and nuclear weapons that threaten both people and planet.
On the anniversary of Chernobyl, we remember the devastating human and environmental impacts of nuclear disaster and the urgent need for a transition grounded in justice, peace, and sustainability.

A feminist just transition means moving away from fossil fuels, militarism, and false solutions, and toward peace, renewable energy, and collective security for all.

This Earth Day, we’re taking part in the Global Day of Action for Peace and Climate Justice, as part of the Global Days of Action on Military Spending (GDAMS), and calling to cut military spending and invest in peace, people, and the planet.

Armed conflicts devastate forests, biodiversity, and communities, often in the most vulnerable areas.

An onboard event led by International Director Remy Millot explored the environmental impacts of war and militarism, highlighting their role as key drivers of the climate crisis. If global militaries were a country, they would be the world’s fourth-largest emitter of greenhouse gases.

Participants on the 123rd Global Voyage also took part in a photo action calling to “Demilitarize for Climate Justice.”
