"Going to Japan with Wanderrock was perhaps the best decision I ever made. I have saved lives, human and animal. I have inspired and uplifted dozens of children through my work in childcare over the last few summers. I’ve loved, and laughed, and lived through experiences that many would wish for, and that has been fortunate for me. And of everything I’ve done, going to Japan with Wanderrock is still perhaps the best decision I’ve ever made.
I’d never been to another country before, as I’ve never had the means. At first I was both excited and nervous about being in a country where nobody spoke my language, where I would be hopeless without the aid of the people leading the trip, but I quickly found that not to be the case. While the guides were essential in planning and logistics, communication was possible with locals, if limited. The guides informed us of a few words we would need, how to say “excuse me” or “I’m sorry” or “thank you” properly, and I found that to be more than enough. Each of the guides was a friendly and helpful person with their own brilliant personality, and all were perfectly okay with helping when needed. The guides are truly one of the best parts of the trip.
Aside from the guides, the activities organized were engaging, eye-opening, and exciting. I got to climb a mountain and feed monkeys, I played at shooting galleries and arcades, put coins in a frankly inadvisable amount of gachapon machines, and ate the most delightful food. There was a place in Osaka, five floors up in a random building. You fill out a form in Japanese with the food you wish to order, and they batter it, fry it, and serve it to you on a stick. I ate churros dunked in ice cream with oreos at a street vendor. I grilled my own wagyu. I even got to eat at a chain curry restaurant that made me so happy I bought a commemorative spoon."
