How Rivers Built Edo
Senju Walk + Yakatabune | Special Edition — Oct 26, 2025
Tokyo (old Edo) grew along rivers and bridges. During more than two centuries of stability under the Tokugawa shogunate, waterways carried goods, people, and culture, shaping one of the world’s largest early modern cities. Senju—the first post town north of Nihonbashi—was the gateway where travelers entered and left Edo.
On this one-day special, we walk the Great Senju Bridge area and old market lane, read the stories of bridges, banks, and docks, then sail on a yakatabune to see the city from the water—the original viewpoint that built Edo.
“Ever since I was six I’ve been obsessed by drawing the form of things.” — Hokusai
