The Takikawa Kaigyuu's Awakening from Its Ancient Slumber ~The Path from Discovery 40 Years Ago~
In 1980 these fossils were unexpectedly discovered by fossil-enthusiasts in the Sorachi river. Their discovery led to the first case in Hokkaido of citizens rather than research institutions excavating, studying, and spreading awareness of unearthed fossils, and made a large impact on fossil excavation in Hokkaido thereafter. The newly-recognized species was named the "Takikawa Kaigyuu" (Takikawa Sea Cow), and its fossils became the first fossils registered as a Hokkaido Cultural Property (Natural Monument).
Local school teachers conducted all manner of activities concerning the Takikawa Kaigyuu, and their work to disseminate their research findings and excavation efforts inspired hopes and dreams in their students.
This exhibit marks the first time in 38 years that the original fossils will be on display to the public, transporting visitors back to the excitement of that discovery 40 years ago.
Tanaka Saburou's Footprints
One of the people involved in the Takikawa Kaigyuu's excavation was a high school earth science teacher named Tanaka Saburou (family name: Tanaka). Having been fascinated by the discovery, he remained in Takikawa after retirement even as other colleagues left due to job transfers, and continued spreading the joys of fossils to children in Takikawa as well as the town of Numata. In addition, he continued excavating fossils throughout Hokkaido and made many important discoveries. In this exhibit, we will introduce fossils discovered in Numata where Mr. Tanaka remains active, as well as the path Mr. Tanaka has walked in the 40 years since the Takikawa Kaigyuu excavation.
