🚌 Public buses to popular destinations on the Kumano Kodo can get busy during the peak fall season.

To help, Tanabe City is adding limited-time seasonal transportation services to the Kumano Kodo, Hongu’s onsen areas, and the Kumano-gawa River Boat Tour.

【～ October & November Are Busy — Consider the Kumano Kodo December through February ～】

❄️ With many accommodations already booked for autumn 2026, December–February can be a great time to walk the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi Route.

🥾 Trails are open, with a quieter winter atmosphere.
🛏️ More accommodation options are available, especially for individual requests.
🌸 Enjoy winter scenery such as ume blossoms, late autumn color, and the straw-hatted Jizo at Fushiogami.
♨️ Warm up in an onsen, including Sennin-buro, the huge outdoor river bath in Kawayu Onsen.
☕ Hot drinks are available from vending machines — look for the red price labels.

It gets cold and daylight is shorter, but snow is relatively uncommon, and the southern Kii Peninsula has a milder winter than much of Japan.

⚠️ Note: The Kohechi Route is closed in winter due to possible snow on the mountain passes.

🌸 冬ならではの景色も。梅の花や晩秋の紅葉、「わら帽子のお地蔵さん」など、季節の風景を楽しめます。
♨️ 温泉でほっとひと息。川湯温泉の巨大な露天風呂「仙人風呂」など、冬の熊野で温泉を満喫しましょう。

寒さが厳しくなり、日照時間も短くなりますが、雪が降ることは比較的少なく、紀伊半島南部の冬は日本の他の地域に比べて穏やかです。

⚠️ 小辺路は、峠での積雪の可能性があるため、冬季は通行できません。
