Just 3 km from Mawatari Yasuragi Park (our previous post) and its 320 cherry trees lies another must-see treasure: the Japan Heritage site of Samurai Silk, Matsugaoka Reclamation Lands.

This is where former warriors of the Shonai Clan reinvented themselves after the Boshin War, transforming once wild land into mulberry fields. Here, they began raising silkworms and producing silk entirely on site,a tradition that continues to this day in Tsuruoka.

Matsugaoka is expected to be at its most beautiful this weekend, just as the cherry blossoms reach their peak.

The Matsugaoka Sakura Festival will take place from 10:00 to 15:00, so expect a lively atmosphere. For the occasion, a free shuttle bus will run from Haguro Chosha on Saturday and Sunday.

Mawatari River’s Yasuragi Park is another beautiful spot to enjoy cherry blossoms in Tsuruoka. Blooming slightly later than those in Tsuruoka Park, the 320 sakura trees here are expected to reach full bloom this weekend, weather permitting 🤞

Located just 3.7 km from Yupoka bus stop (on the Haguro–Gassan Hachigome line), the park makes for a perfect spring outing. After soaking in the serene beauty of the blossoms, why not extend the experience with a relaxing bath at Yupoka Yamabushi Onsen?

Zenpoji Temple is another beautiful spot to enjoy during the sakura season 🌸

From the top of the temple’s stairway on the shukubo side, you can catch a stunning view of its Five-Storied Pagoda framed by cherry blossoms, quiet, elegant, and deeply atmospheric.

We’re happy to share a few photos captured by Master Shinozaki.

Cherry blossoms are putting on their best show in Tsuruoka right now.

They’re in full bloom at Tsuruoka Park, while Atsumi Onsen is just about to reach its peak. The timing couldn’t be better—but it won’t last long. Those delicate pink petals will soon be carried away by the spring breeze.

If you’ve been thinking about coming, now is the moment.

Spring in Tsuruoka is a season of celebrations 🌸

From early April to early June, the region comes alive with a rich variety of matsuri, blending nature, tradition, and community

🌸 Early April
Cherry blossom season begins with the Tsuruoka Sakura Festival in Tsuruoka Park, lively with food stalls under 700 trees. In Atsumi Onsen, the blossoms are illuminated along the river at night, while Matsugaoka offers a unique mix of sakura, historic silk buildings, markets, and evening light ups.

💧 April 15
In Nezugaseki, a dramatic ritual unfolds as young men carry a mikoshi into the river, splashing water to pray for abundant fishing.

💜 May
Wisteria bloom in Fujishima, creating a calm and elegant spring atmosphere. At Kawachi Shrine, traditional Noh and Kabuki performances are offered in a festive yet cultural setting.

🎭 May 25
The Tenjin Matsuri fills Tsuruoka with masked figures offering sake in one of the region’s most unique and lively festivals.

🌿 Late May
The Takitaro Matsuri invites families to enjoy nature in the Asahi mountains with outdoor activities and forest experiences.

⛰ Early June
Mt Yudono opens its sacred season with a solemn ceremony, followed by the lively Oyama Dog Festival celebrating loyalty through parades and local legend.

In Tsuruoka, spring is a journey from blossoms to traditions, offering a new experience each week.

This weekend, we visited Yutagawa Plum Grove for the Umematsuri 🌸

Every year, the hot spring village comes alive with beautiful pink, white, and light red plum blossoms until Early April, just before the cherry blossoms. Take a leisurely stroll through the park, and be sure to stop by Parosu, a local souvenir shop where you can enjoy dadachamame ice cream and other tasty treats.

For a daytime café break, head to Paris London Brazil—a colorful café/izakaya serving comforting soul food and drinks.

While you’re in Yutagawa, don’t miss the chance to relax in one of the public footbaths, or take a dip in the daytime bath at Shomen no Yu.

That said, the best way to truly experience Yutagawa Onsen is to stay overnight in one of its cozy, family-run ryokan, where you can soak in the atmosphere as much as the hot springs.

🐙✨ Finally! Kamo Aquarium will reopen tomorrow! ✨🐟

Kamo Aquarium reopens its doors tomorrow, April 1st (and no, this is not an April Fool’s joke!)

Even more impressive than before, the aquarium now showcases up to 100 species of jellyfish, along with a brand-new educational area featuring mini aquariums where you can learn more about the evolution of these fascinating creatures.

⚠️ Access information:
Due to a major landslide on the coastal road between Yura and the aquarium (Prefectural Road Fujishima–Yura Line), the road remains closed for an indefinite period.
👉 If you are visiting by car from Atsumi/Yura areas, please make sure to take a detour (via Route 112, etc.).

Bus stop: Kamo Suizokukan

We wish you a wonderful visit and hope you enjoy discovering the renewed Kamo Aquarium!

Mt. Yudono isn’t just about mummies and sacred pilgrimages… ❄️

In winter, it transforms into a hidden snow playground buried under crazy amounts of powder.
Welcome to Yudonosan Skijo, a small, local ski park with a big personality. Loved by local snowboarders, it’s famous for its playful terrain: bumps, moguls, and smooth slopes designed by former snowboard athlete Jun Maruyama. Locals even call it the “R Paradise” — “R” for radius — a nod to all those perfectly round curves and bumpy features.

This is NOT a mega-resort. No crowds. No mass tourism.

Just a charming mountainside, a family-run atmosphere, and the kind of fresh air that resets your soul.

Here, you experience skiing and snowboarding the Japanese way, with Mt. Yudono’s generous powder wrapping everything in silence and white and many onsens waiting for you down in Tsuruoka city. On the way, make sure to have a bowl of buckwheat noodles at the soba restaurant Nanakamado, and pay a visit to Dainichibo Temple's sokushinbutsu Shinnyokai-shonin.

✔️ Ski & gear rentals available
✔️ Cozy hut serving curry rice and simple comfort meals
✔️ Real Japow. Real locals. Real vibe.

In Yamagata Prefecture, Northern Japan, a 1,200-year-old pilgrimage route leads travelers to Mt. Yudono, one of the most sacred mountains of Shingon Buddhism and one of the Dewa Sanzan sacred mountains.
This historic path winds through a sequence of Buddhist temples and sacred sites, home to sokushinbutsu (self-mummified monks), revered Buddhist statues, ancient sacred trees, and rare endemic flowers found only in Bandai-Asahi National Park, where the route is located.
Walk the full 39 km (24.2 miles) pilgrimage to experience Mt. Yudono’s profound “Journey of Rebirth”—a spiritual passage followed by pilgrims for centuries.
