A fire broke out around 9:30 p.m. on June 9 at Arima Inari Shrine in Kobe’s Kita Ward, near the popular Arima Onsen hot spring area. The fire originated in the residence of the shrine’s chief priest and spread to other buildings.
Three structures, including the priest’s home and the shrine office, were completely destroyed. The elderly chief priest and his wife, both in their 80s, suffered minor injuries. Firefighters faced challenges due to the shrine’s location, which requires climbing approximately 200 steps.
The fire was brought under control after about five hours. Some nearby hotel guests were temporarily evacuated as a precaution. Police and fire officials are investigating the cause.
