We traveled from Kyoto to Takayama via Nagoya and took the Limited Express Hida Train. The journey is quite long, but the scenery along the way makes it absolutely worth it. Instead of sleeping, you’ll probably find yourself glued to the window, watching the rivers, mountains, and countryside pass by 😂.
What makes the Hida Train even more special is that it almost feels like a guided tour, with announcements explaining the places and landmarks as the train moves along.
Travel details:
• Total travel time: around 3 to 3.5 hours
• Kyoto → Nagoya (Shinkansen): about 35–45 minutes
• Nagoya → Takayama (Limited Express Hida): about 2 hours 30 minutes
• Estimated cost: around ¥10,000–¥10,800 one way
Right after checking in, we headed out to explore what they call “Little Kyoto.” Our first stop was the famous red bridge, and we were instantly thrilled by the view. The clear river flowing beneath it, the mountains in the background, and the peaceful surroundings immediately set the tone for our stay.
As we walked toward the Old Town, the streets lined with traditional wooden houses made it feel like stepping back in time. Takayama has a different kind of charm—quiet, relaxing, and the kind of place that makes you realize the long journey was completely worth it.
Definitely one for the books. Will we return? Absolutely. It’s now my second favorite place in Japan, next to Kyoto.
Long journey, peaceful town, unforgettable experience. ✨
