🏯 Hidden within the forests of Nikko, Taiyuin is the resting place of Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third sh**un of the Tokugawa sh**unate. It is said that Iemitsu deeply admired his grandfather, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and wished to remain close to him even after death.

Taiyuin feels calmer and more solemn. Surrounded by towering cedar trees, its black-and-gold architecture, detailed carvings, and quiet stone paths create an atmosphere that feels both powerful and peaceful.

Passing through the Yashamon Gate and climbing the stone steps, visitors are slowly drawn into the world of the Edo period.
If you enjoy Japanese history, traditional architecture, or simply want to experience a quieter side of Nikko, Taiyuin is a place worth taking your time to explore.

🏛️ Utsunomiya’s Legacy in Stone—Discover the "Japan Heritage" Oya Stone Culture ✨
When it comes to the iconic landscapes of Tochigi, the Oya Stone culture is an absolute must-see! 🧱 Designated as a Japan Heritage site under the theme "Sacred Site of the Underground Labyrinth," this unique tuff rock is found exclusively in the Oya district of Utsunomiya. Known for its warm texture, lightweight, and fire-resistant properties, it has been a cornerstone of Japanese architecture and craftsmanship for centuries. 🌿

The beauty of Oya Stone gained international fame when the legendary American architect Frank Lloyd Wright featured it in the construction of the old Imperial Hotel. ✨ One of its most distinctive features is the "Miso"—small brown spots on the surface that give the stone a natural, rustic warmth and character. 📸

In Utsunomiya, the legacy of Oya Stone is everywhere:
⛪ Matsugamine Church: A stunning cathedral with its entire exterior crafted from Oya Stone.
🏯 Utsunomiya Castle Ruins: Witness historical stone walls that have stood the test of time.
🥟 Utsunomiya Gyoza Statue: Even the city’s famous gyoza mascot is carved from this local treasure!

To truly experience the "Underground Labyrinth," a visit to the Oya History Museum is essential. 🏛️ The massive former underground quarry feels like a scene from a fantasy movie and is a sanctuary for photographers and architecture lovers alike.

🏮 Step into a Living Legend—The Heike Taisai Festival 2026 Returns! ✨
After the legendary Battle of Dan-no-ura, it is said that some surviving warriors and families of the defeated Heike clan fled into the remote mountains 🏔️ and eventually settled in the hidden village of Yunishigawa. 🌿 Each June, the community commemorates this legacy through the Heike Taisai Festival, a cultural celebration that recreates the splendor and elegance of the Heian period (794–1185 AD). 🏯🎭

This year’s festival will take place on June 6 (Sat) & 7 (Sun). 🗓️ From the mysterious pre-evening ceremonies and the "Joro" procession through the lantern-lit streets on Saturday night 🏮✨, to ancient rites at Akama Shrine and elegant Satsuma Biwa performances on Sunday—every event immerses you in a world where history and memory come alive. 🎶🍂

Please note: the iconic "Emaki Gyoretsu Procession" will not be held this year, and there will be no recruitment for princess or samurai roles. 🛡️ Although the procession is paused, the core rituals and artistic performances will proceed, offering rich cultural experiences and a timeless atmosphere. 🌌🏯

🔥 Overwhelming Power! The 38th Nasu Seshoseki Gojinka Festival ✨
Did you know that the largest volcanic area in all of Japan is located in the Nasu region of Tochigi? 🌋 To appease the wrath of the mountain gods, villagers traditionally purify themselves at Nasu Onsen Shrine and collect fire from the "Avici Hell" to worship as Gojinka (Divine Fire). 🌿 This tradition has been passed down for generations as a prayer for a bountiful harvest and good health. 🌾

The highlight of the festival is the Avici parade (Matsumaki Gyoretsu)! 🕯️ Participants dressed in pure white robes and wearing fox masks 🦊 carry blazing torches from the shrine to the Killing Stone (Seshoseki). In the thunderous sound of Taiko drums, the entire venue transforms into a mysterious fantasy world. 🌌 Don't miss the "Cosplay Night Parade of One Hundred Demons" this year as well! 👺🎭✨
