Welcome to the official page of the Wakayama Tourism Federation of Japan! Wakayama is located next south of Osaka, and has easy access from Kansai International Airport. Though it is close to big cities like Osaka, Kyoto, Nara etc, Wakayama is rich in beautiful nature such as waterfall, deep mountains, white sand beaches and cliffs. Our two major UNESCO world heritage sites, Koyasan and K

umano, are together registered as 'Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range'. If you are looking for the destination for relaxing and making yourself at home, Wakayama would be one of your choices!!

The quiet stone staircase of Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine comes alive with the roar of flames and chants once a year in mid-July. During the Nachi-no-Ogi Matsuri, or Nachi Fire Festival, men carry massive burning torches down the ancient path to purify the way for sacred portable shrines representing the waterfall’s deity.

Step off the beaten path to discover less-traveled shrines like Niutsuhime Jinja, in the foothills of Koyasan. With a history of 1700 years, the shrine is among the most ancient in Wakayama. You don’t need extreme sports for an adrenaline kick. Just head over to Ryujin Village and cross the wooden suspension bridge over the Hidaka-gawa River. It sways, it creaks, and it’s pretty high up. But the view of the emerald waters below is quite spectacular.

The beauty and scale of Nachi Falls have inspired awe and reverence since ancient times. At Hiro-jinja Shrine, there is no worship hall, and devotees instead pray directly to the falls, the tallest single-drop waterfall in Japan. Feel the spray on your skin as you stand at the torii gate.

Have you heard of Yatagarasu? According to legend, this three-legged crow guided the legendary first emperor Jimmu to the ancient capital of Nara, then returned here to Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine. The Yatagarasu is said to be resting to this day in the shrine's inner sanctum.
