to Get to the Oki Islands 🚢✈️

Many people have been asking how to travel to the Oki Islands. Here are the two main ways to get there!

✈️ By Air
You can fly directly from Osaka Itami Airport to Oki Airport (located on Dōgo Island, Okinoshima Town). The flight takes about 1 hour, making it the fastest and most convenient option.

Shimane・Matsue | Minamikan

Founded in 1888 , Minamikan is a long-established ryokan in Matsue, Shimane, with more than a century of history. It was first opened by Seitaro Minami, head of the Minami family, under the name “Minami,” making full use of the breathtaking scenery of Lake Shinji and the surrounding mountains to welcome travelers.

Over the years, Minamikan has hosted members of the Imperial family and attracted many renowned writers, artists, and cultural figures, including Ryunosuke Akutagawa, Yasunari Kawabata, Taro Okamoto, Lafcadio Hearn, Naoya Shiga, and Saneatsu Mushanokoji, giving this ryokan a rich literary and cultural charm 💫

The property offers 19 uniquely designed guest rooms, including popular lake-view rooms with private panoramic baths and suites equipped with their own sauna. Each room has its own distinct character, inviting guests to experience the elegance of Matsue in a tranquil and timeless setting.

A stay at Minamikan would not be complete without trying its signature dish: the family-style sea bream rice. Deeply connected to Matsudaira Fumai, the 7th lord of the Matsue domain, this specialty was created by Minamikan’s first head chef, Tsunetaro Nishimura, and has been passed down through generations. Made with a bonito-based broth and delicately flavored sea bream, it is a refined dish you will want to savor again and again ✨

The garden at Minamikan is equally worth admiring. Designed as a karesansui (dry landscape garden) using Lake Shinji as borrowed scenery, it features 15 pine trees as its main highlight. Among them are a more than 200-year-old Izumo pine and an extraordinary pine tree in the center of the tea salon that is over 300 years old. Carefully maintained through the traditional short-needle pruning method, the garden reflects the quiet beauty and timeless elegance of Japanese aesthetics.

Looking for an affordable local dining spot in Masuda City, Shimane Prefecture? ✨
Just a 6-minute walk from Masuda Station, DAIKOKU (だいこく) is a popular local eatery loved by residents for its generous portions and great value.

The highlight was definitely the Anago Tendon! A huge portion of crispy tempura conger eel served over rice for only ¥1,100—an incredible deal and absolutely satisfying.

Their daily set meals and sashimi set meals are also very popular and often sell out early, so be sure to arrive ahead of time if you'd like to try them!
