27th June 2022 was last Monday. The morning started just like any other. 1,2 issues to settle in wang'uru town and time flew out on me; I was getting late. I had to pass by another hospital to pic some drugs for use at Nguka health center which is my work station. It's about 5 km off the Embu highway west of Wang'uru town, served by a nice dirt road from Thiba kasarani area with occasional bumps and potholes, and rock outcrops. The other route from Mosque through Karira is under construction 🚧🏗️ to be tarmaced and is currently too dusty and longer.
As I rode the straight stretch that passes through unit 17 rice plantation, the ride was sweet and I got rather comfortable. I didn't realize Musa was clocking 70kph on a rough road. There was a Bodaboda guy many meters ahead riding slowly with his feet resting on the "kahurûko" bars that are mods added on the the engine guards. (By the way, Tekken is coming with the Kahurûko stock from factory).
His side mirror is what he had used to check his eyes in the morning after wiping them off what we call in Kikuyu "matongo". He wore some sundals that are cut from worn tyres and had a sharp toe end like mwalimu jini's shoes.
When I approached him and hooted to him to warn him the I am about to overtake, some urgent need for speed got into him and thus he accelerated in a bid to compete but I was faster. Suddenly, he swaved to the right side of the road and obstructed us such that I had to brake hard and apply some evasive move; otherwise I'd rear end him with catastrophic results. I was able to steer my bike to the left and just then I hit a porthole that sent us flying. We landed on Uneven surface like 6meters ahead and the bike sent me over a high side on my right hand side. I don't know how many times we rolled on the road but as the dust cleared, I remember seeing the mwalimu jini sandal passing by with a whistle sounding exhaust pipe of the bike that had literally rocked my world. I crawled off the road and removed my trusty Faseed off-road helmet as I thanked God for it. Then I stood up and walked to my Musa and turned the ignition to off. The engine had died off on its own. I was doing all these while checking on my self for injury. I spotted my left hand glove about 15 meters back and went to pick it. I noticed my right hand was trembling and weakening. Then, when I bent to pick the glove, sharp pain struck me in the right shoulder and the hand became numb. I knew there was a problem. Another two bodabodas stopped and helped lift Musa.
If he was human, he would be wailing in pain to as the windshield was so badly scratched, the front fender, tank, light, engine guards, side mirror covers too got a server road rash 🙃.
I took my phone out and wondered whom to call first. My colligues and inform them of my accident and possible lateness, then... Maina, Morris, Stand 🤔 eish!
Morris Karanja's number appeared sooner on my logs. He acted swiftly and passed my Maish' Mech at Bajaj shop in Mwea. Next to Mwea Rice Farmers Multipurpose Petro St. They acted swiftly and in 20 min, they were at the scene. They found me in the company of the two passers by and another colleague who was also on the way to work. By now, my sagging shoulder was in pain and I couldn't operate my fingers. Now sure my bike was secure withe two fellow Mountain Nomads Bikers, I was taken to hospital in my colleagues's car.
X-rays showed a fractured and dislocated shower. The rest of my skeleton was intact.
At the orthopedic department in Kimbimbi Hospital, Grace and Wachira, did abrakadabra on my shoulder after putting me to sleep and when I woke up two hours later, my shoulder was back in shape but for the fractured greater tubercle which was completely detached. I got slabbed an my lovely wife drove me home.
As I type this, I'm happy my fingers have regained control. I can grab a light item and write ✍️ all be it in a crooked manner.
I thank God for preserving my life in me and my ridding gear for doing it's work.
God bless all those who have been wishing me well and even taking their time to come see me and encourage me to get well soon.
Special thanks to my dear wife Mercy who has been caring for me daily. 💞.
