AFRICANS AND THE CARIBBEAN ARE VISA FREE FOR TO VISIT KENYA
As of January 21–22, 2025, Kenya’s Cabinet officially eliminated electronic travel authorization (eTA) or visa requirements for almost all African nationals, excluding citizens of Somalia and Libya due to security concerns .
Here’s how it works now:
No eTA needed for visitors from all African countries except Somalia and Libya.
Stay durations:
Up to two months for most African nationals.
Up to six months for EAC member countries (Burundi, DR Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda) in accordance with existing EAC free-movement rules .
Optional eTA application still available and can be processed instantly or within 72 hours, designed to speed up entry and support security .
Somalia and Libya: citizens from these countries must still apply for an eTA or visa before traveling.
✅ What travelers from Africa and the Caribbean need to know
All African countries (except Somalia & Libya): visa/eTA-exempt for short-term stays.
Caribbean nationals: Kenya had already adopted a visa-free policy for all countries beginning January 1, 2024, requiring only an eTA registration beforehand .
Those from exempt countries can choose to apply for eTA in advance — helpful for faster processing — but it's not required.
If required (e.g. Somali or Libyan passport holders), travelers can apply online for an eTA at least 72 hours in advance, with a fee (approx. US $30).
Why the change?
Boosts regional integration, aligning with the AU vision of open intra-African movement .
Stimulates tourism and business travel within the continent .
Maintains security protocols via upgraded API/PNR systems and optional eTA for non-exempt travelers .
Quick summary:
Nationality eTA/Visa Maximum stay
Most African countries No 2 months
EAC member countries No 6 months
Somalia, Libya Yes Varies (upon approval)
