The North of Kyoto has a special place in my heart due to its local shrines' mysterious atmosphere and the secrets hidden in its forests and mountains. It offers a genuine adventure away from tourist crowds. The Miyama Kayabuki-no-Sato, is famous for its flammable thatched-roof houses, 39 thatched roof houses built over 200 years ago are conserved and are reflects the scenery of old Japan in the countryside protected by an intricate system of 62 water hoses that automatically spray water if a fire occurs. The biannual tests by the local fire brigade happens twice a year May and December providing a breathtaking view.

The view of the Gujo Hachiman castle town from the keep above is not to be missed!
Gujo Hachiman Castle’s story begins towards the end of the Warring States period when, in 1559, Endo Morikazu established it as his stronghold.

In 1871, with the abolition of feudal domains and establishment of prefectures in Japan, Gujo Hachiman Castle was demolished the following year, leaving only its stone walls standing. Presently, all the stone walls of the castle are designated as important historical properties of the prefecture, and the castle keep is designated a municipal treasure.

From the castle keep, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the castle town and the mountains of Okumino all at once.

Tochigi Prefecture is located approximately 100 km north of Tokyo. Utsunomiya, its most populous city, can be reached in about one hour by Shinkansen. The northern Nasu and Nikko areas are home to a range of mountains with peaks more than 2,000 meters high, giving way to wide open plains in the south. Each area has its own distinct features, from the Nasu area, one of the premier highland resort areas in Japan, to the Nikko area and its UNESCO World Heritage shrines and temples in the mountains, the central area with Utsunomiya as its transportation hub, the eastern area which have thriving traditional crafts, and the southern area, which is nearest to Tokyo and once flourished as a commercial center.
