This came up in my memories today, taken around Christmas 2017.

The Fig Tree pride had had a baby boom that year and eventually those that made it to dispersal, would become some felines that are still around today.

There were four mothers in Fig Tree pride in 2017. I can identify the two lionesses with the older litters and the two with the younger litters, but I’m not sure which lioness had which litter (of course guesses can be made based on looks though appearances alone aren’t always reliable).

That said, some info you may not know that I recorded back in 2017:

- Osupat was in the oldest litter
- Nyekundu/Olonyokie was in the next litter, less than a month between their birthdays
- Almost 6 months later Sukari was born, she had 3 littermates (of course there could have been more prior to my sightings)
- Then Samara was the youngest along with her littermate.

I had a particular fondness of seeing Slitnose Supermama in the field, I was relatively new to following the Mara’s big cats back then and I found it easy to recognise her with that nose.

While I don’t know if she is mother of Sukari or Samara, she was mother of one of the 2 younger litters. She certainly played a part in giving her daughter that rich red coat of hers, even redder than Maridadi, who was particularly stunning around that time.

For those newer to following lions, guides also called Maridadi and Kaka ‘the Orange boys’, for obvious reasons!

Hehe, Nelerai (Mikunjo’s daughter with the Salas boys) doing the rounds… after Orkirikoi, she’s now mating with Chongo just outside camp again 😆

We often see Nelerai alone, doing her own thing. Nalang’u is a bit like that too.

And time and again, they’re the ones taking one for the team and entertaining (or decoying!) intruders sniffing around… much like Nalang’u’s mama, One-eyed Beauty, used to do so well.

Been a while since I’ve done one of these grids, so switched it up as a reel 😅

Here are the next wave of (rather maneless 🤩) dispersers coming through from the 6 packers, adding to a legacy of 30+ lions that have either dispersed or become part of the pride under their reign to date.

The Paradise boys:
Oloramat. Olorrip. Lemarti.

Olorrip is likely the son of one of the 5 daughters from the first generation of the 6 pack in the Paradise pride…where fathers can also be grandfathers 🙃.

Isn’t he cute 🥰

Kini, one of the Sankai boys, back in 2020 as they settled in Lemek.

Kini is one of those lions who has changed almost beyond recognition since his younger years.

‘Kini’ means ‘small’ in Maa, and when the Lemek Rangers named them in the field, he was the smallest of the five. Behind him is ‘Lemurt’ — meaning ‘big neck’ — his mane almost wrapping around Kini.

Back then, Lemurt was far more developed, beyond just the age gap. Kini’s growth seemed a little stunted, likely shaped by a serious scrap he got into in 2020, presumably with their arch rivals, the Ntuis (ex–Mara North males).

Since the loss of his brother Seenka, he’s become elusive, with only a single sighting reported by local camp owners and guides.

Hopefully he doesn’t lose confidence or his fighting spirit. As the coalition’s bruiser, so much now rests on him in terms of his own survival and that of the pride.

We wish him and his pride the very best. More Kinís around is only ever a thing.

Serious business… even if it doesn’t look like it 😅

Am sure you folks can come up with some great, amusing captions below?! ⬇️ Have you seen lions do this before?

This is nature’s chemistry lab at work.

This is how lions read the invisible. When they pull this expression, they’re analysing scent, picking up pheromones to work out who’s been around.

Silent communication at its finest - decoded through the flehmen response 🦁

Following on from yesterday’s post, where Orongai was the most popular guess for the featured cub, here is mini Orongai, captured on the very same day back in Jan’23 as yesterday’s pic of Lepiyayoi.

The age-old debate we’ll never know for sure: who’s the father? But looking at this, Orongai really reminds me of Lorkulup’s appearance in my old baby photos of him.

You don’t just hear a lion roar. You feel it.

Close up, it's not just loud, it's physical. It's a force that you feel. It hits you in the chest.... a deep, vibrating force that rises through the ground as much as the air. You feel the power. The authority. The confidence. And in the right company, there's no voices, no engines, no radios, just silence. Because everyone is - or should be - commanded by the roar. And honestly, it's one of the BEST life experiences!

For me, I'm always in pure awe and can never get enough. Total respect for something so raw and real….a scene that’s played out for thousands of years, yet in that moment, everything pauses. Timeless.

Never underestimate a female’s worth! Here we have Kito of the Marsh pride heading to the dinner table after some members of the Paradise pride had left just moments before. Lola and Enkerai sat back and watched as Kito fended off the hyenas all by herself like the female boss she is! Enkerai eventually joined her, while Lola seemed far more interested in getting some water and shade.

Nearby, three of the Topi boys (Kio, Nzuri and Vuli) were busy mating with some of the Paradise females, while the nursery, full of six healthy cubs, was a little further away in the company of mamas Nado and Nyigu.

tbt Kiraka, son of the Paiya males out of the Kissinger/KWS pride, Easter 2019.

He was one of the subs who took a strong beating from the 4 former Hammerkop males (Mdogo and co) back in 2018. He was left with this unique black patch around his eye.

I don’t remember many updates on him after this photo was taken but for sure the 3 sisters / age mates he was with at this sighting I’ve since seen in the field across the years, they were evidently accepted by the Mdogos and went on to have litters with them.
