Kenya's wildlife tourism story is most often told through the Maasai Mara, Amboseli, and the Great Rift Valley. And those destinations are extraordinary — we take our clients there too. But there is another Kenya, less visited, less photographed, and in many ways more extraordinary still. 🌳 Stop 1 — Kakamega Forest National Reserve
Kenya's Last Tropical Rainforest · A World Apart
Kakamega Forest is Kenya's only tropical rainforest and the last remaining fragment of the ancient Guineo-Congolian rainforest that once extended across Central and West Africa. Gazetted as a Trust Forest in 1933 and formally protected as a national reserve in 1985, Kakamega covers approximately 238 square kilometres of cathedral-canopy forest in western Kenya, approximately 50 kilometres north of Kisumu.
This is not savannah Kenya. This is something altogether different — a living relict of an ancient forest system, where the air is cool and damp, the light filters green through a canopy of giant Elgon teak and strangler figs, and the sounds are not the roar of lions but the otherworldly call of the Great Blue Turaco, the flash of a Grey Parrot between the trees, and the distant chatter of De Brazza's monkeys — the rarest primate in Kenya.
367 bird species have been recorded at Kakamega. Nine of the species that occur here are found nowhere else in Kenya, including Turner's Eremomela and Chapin's Flycatcher — both globally threatened. The Kenya Forest Service offers two-hour birdwatching tours at 6:30 AM and 4:30 PM — the early morning session is particularly productive, as the canopy comes alive before the heat of the day quiets it. Kakamega is also a UNESCO World Heritage Tentative Site, and a designated Important Bird Area of continental significance.
Beyond birds: over 400 butterfly species, black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and rare De Brazza's monkeys inhabit the forest, along with over 40 snake species, giant Goliath beetles, and hundreds of orchid and fern varieties. Kakamega is not just a forest. It is a world.
🦌 Stop 2 — Kisumu Impala Sanctuary
A Lakeside Gem on the Shores of Africa's Greatest Lake
Gazetted in 1992 to protect a threatened local impala population, the compact 1.5-square-kilometre Kisumu Impala Sanctuary now serves as a vital refuge for both free-ranging and rescued wildlife, set directly on the shores of Lake Victoria — the largest freshwater lake in Africa, just three kilometres from Kisumu's city centre.
Do not let its modest size deceive you. The sanctuary's diverse landscape of savanna grasslands, forested woods, and papyrus swamps is home to grazing hippos, zebras, the rare Sitatunga antelope, and roaming impalas. Its animal orphanage houses four of the Big Five — lions, leopards, Cape buffaloes, and white rhinos — alongside cheetahs, hyenas, and primates. Over 115 bird species add to the vibrant lakeside biodiversity.
The sanctuary is branded as "a lakeshore walk with impalas" — a designation that captures something of its quiet magic. Walking the trails with a herd of impalas moving around you, Lake Victoria shimmering through the papyrus, hippos surfacing in the shallows, and the late afternoon sun turning the water to gold at Hippo Point — this is Kisumu at its most quietly magnificent. Annually the sanctuary conducts the Kisumu Impala Conservation Boat Race in November to raise awareness of the endangered Sitatunga antelope.
🦌 Stop 3 — Saiwa Swamp National Park
Kenya's Smallest National Park · Its Most Intimate Wildlife Encounter
Saiwa Swamp National Park is situated near Kitale in Trans-Nzoia County, 385 kilometres northwest of Nairobi, almost on the Uganda border. The park covers only 3 square kilometres and was gazetted as a national park in 1974 with the main aim of protecting the rare Sitatunga antelope. It is Kenya's smallest national park — but in terms of rarity of encounter, it punches at a weight that few parks anywhere in the world can match.
The Sitatunga is called "the ghost of the swamp" by local Bukusu communities because of how it vanishes underwater when threatened. This remarkable semi-aquatic antelope — with its shaggy, waterproof coat, splayed hooves adapted to marshy ground, and secretive nature — is found nowhere else in Kenya in meaningful numbers. With some patience, sightings of the female are almost guaranteed. The park's stilted observation towers, positioned over the swamp and along the riverine forest edge, are the finest vantage points.
Saiwa Swamp is the only place in East Africa where you stand a good chance of seeing the De Brazza's monkey — a species associated with forested swamp edges. These primates freeze when threatened, curling into balls against tree trunks and waiting, motionless, sometimes for twenty minutes or more. Finding one is a genuine wildlife achievement.
A true birdwatcher's paradise, Saiwa boasts over 372 recorded bird species and is designated an Important Bird Area. Water birds include the lesser jacana, grey heron, and African black duck, while the forest shelters Narina trogons, the collared and orange-tufted sunbird, the yellow bishop, Hartlaub's marsh widowbird, and the noisy Ross's turaco. The park is accessible by road but can only be explored on foot, with 18 kilometres of walking trails and boardwalks that meander across the swamp itself. This is a park for those who want to slow down, look closely, and let the wild come to them.
