The zebra migration across the Mara–Serengeti ecosystem plays a crucial role in the Great Migration. Each year, over 200,000 zebras move alongside wildebeests in search of fresh grazing, journeying between Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara. Their distinctive stripes help confuse predators during large herd movements, improving their chances of survival. Zebras are often the first to cross rivers like the Mara, using their sharp senses to detect threats such as crocodiles. Covering up to 1,800 miles annually, they display extraordinary stamina and navigational memory. Their grazing habits also complement those of wildebeests, supporting ecological balance by targeting different layers of grass.
