Lions don’t need to drink every day, but when they do, they can take in quite a lot.
They typically drink every 2–3 days but can survive up to 4–5 days without water in dry conditions or after eating, as they get moisture from their prey and conserve water efficiently.
They can consume 10–20 liters or more for large males in a single session.

Big Bulls & Their “Askaris”

You may sometimes see younger bulls walking closely beside a giant tusker.
Among guides, these younger elephants are informally called “Askaris”, not because they truly guard the big bull, but because they look like bodyguards.

Once upon a time in East Africa, giant tusker elephants were so valuable, and so vulnerable, that they walked the wild under armed guard.

These legendary bulls, carrying tusks that almost touched the ground, were protected by Askaris, African guards who followed them day and night, keeping poachers at bay. One of the most famous was Ahmed the Elephant, whose protection marked a turning point from ivory hunting to wildlife conservation.

In reality, it’s the opposite:
the presence of a dominant, experienced bull offers security, learning, and status to the younger ones. The old giant doesn’t need protection, he is the protection.

A poetic safari term, not a scientific one but a beautiful way to read elephant society.

Could this be the “white smoke” signaling hope for the future of the critically endangered Northern White Rhino?

Today, only two northern white rhinos remain on Earth — both females and unable to carry a pregnancy. To save this sub-species from extinction, scientists are working to create embryos in the lab, which will then be implanted into surrogate southern white rhino mothers.
To make this possible, a sterile male is kept with potential surrogates. His presence helps researchers monitor the females’ estrous cycles and pinpoint the perfect timing for embryo transfer.
With a pregnancy lasting an excruciating 16 months, patience is vital. Every small step forward brings us closer to the miracle of a northern white rhino calf — and with it, a chance to turn the tide for this magnificent animal.
