Rhinos at Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru is one of the best places in Kenya to see rhinos in the wild. It’s a protected sanctuary for both:

🖤 Black Rhino (Diceros bicornis)
-Smaller, more aggressive, and critically endangered
-Usually found browsing in bushes
Harder to spot, but Nakuru has a good population

🤍 White Rhino (Ceratotherium simum)
-Larger and more relaxed
-Often seen grazing in open grasslands
-Easier to spot, sometimes in groups

🌿 Why Nakuru is special:
-One of Kenya’s first rhino sanctuaries
-Highly protected with anti-poaching measures
-High success rate for sightings compared to many parks

👀 Best spots in the park:
-Around the lakeshore grasslands
-Near Baboon Cliff road areas
-Open savannah sections

⏰ Best time to see them:
Early morning or late afternoon when they are most active

Incredible

Ol Pejeta’s black rhino population has reached 183 individuals, including 23 calves born in 2025 (17 black rhinos and 6 southern white rhinos), one of the strongest growth surges we’ve ever recorded.

Kenya once had nearly 20,000 black rhinos. By the mid-1980s, fewer than 400 remained. Today, the country holds about 1,000, and Ol Pejeta is home to the largest population in East and Central Africa.
Seven straight years of zero poaching incidents here have helped make that possible.

But growing numbers mean growing challenges. Rhinos are territorial, space is finite, and managing this population responsibly is now a critical part of protecting the species.

Our latest article breaks down what this boom means for rhino conservation, and why strategic habitat expansion and translocations are shaping the future.

Great news

Amboseli National Park in Kenya just had a record 140 baby elephants born this year - the biggest "baby boom" ever recorded.
Experts credit good rains, anti-poaching patrols, and years of patient conservation.
Each newborn calf is a small victory for the planet - living proof that when we protect nature, it rewards us in return.
Hope is alive in the savanna
