Did you know that the fear of snakes (Ophidiophobia) is one of the most common phobias worldwide? It is believed that at least 1/3 of all adult humans are ophidiophobic yet some have never even seen snakes.

Snakes are found all over Kenya, from savanna grassland, woodland, forests, with some species found in the ocean. Kenya is endowed with approximately 140 snake species, both venomous and non-venomous. Out these number, only 29 species are venomous.

The most dangerous, also known as the big five snakes in Kenya are; Black mamba,Puff adder,Boom slang,African rock python and the
Cobra.

Snakes are very important because they help to balance the ecosystem and also play a major role in the control of disease-carrying vermin and crop raiders like rats, mice, bats, and birds. Some snakes are harmless and it is good to let them live around us because they help to regulate vermin population.

Most snakes will always avoid interactions with people, however, they are likely to bite if frightened in their natural environment, or when they move into human habitat in search of food or water. It is important to have basic survival tactics on coexistence to avoid attacks.
