Today we meet Maina, a nyama choma connoisseur if you will. He reminds me of an opera conductor with his symphony of meat. He took over this highly competitive business from his former employer - Mr. Kamakis, the pioneer after whom this whole area is named after. A legend in his own right.

It’s crazy to think about the evolution of ‘nyam chom’ as its popularly known. Once a rare meal that was cooked only on special occasions. Now it sits squarely on the throne as Nairobi’s top street food, virtually found everywhere.

On this episode, we feature Abdullahi Bulle, who owns Nuria bookshop which has a large collection of African books. He has a novel mission; to create a decentralized network of African books and art held by individuals and companies whose records remain public. This is to protect our own culture and heritage against neocolonialism and erosion. Can this be done? How do we protect what we still have for future generations?

Some old photos of how Nairobi looked in the 1990s. Such rapid loss of the greenery compared to present day. Thank goodness for spaces like the plant nursery and Karura forest (which has dwindled and continues to be under threat).
Pic 1 is the mall Westlands 😮
Pic 2 not sure maybe Peponi road and general mathenge junction?
Pic 3 is the Westlands roundabout
Pic 4 not sure maybe off Rhapta road?
Last slide is an aerial shot of Westlands in 2004 vs. 2025. An alarming decline in green cover on the southern and eastern ends of the plant nursery.

In our last video of 2025, we paid a visit to a place that’s right in the heart of Nairobi. Across westgate and mwanzi market, sits this densely green space. On the outskirts you can’t tell what lies inside it, but once you go in, you’ll find a world of plants and seedlings nurtured by hundreds of people. You’ll find all kinds of trees, flowers, and fruits right here. This market accounts for a lot of the greenery you see in public and private properties across Nairobi and beyond.

We meet David, who is the head of the plant sellers association. He has been here since he was a teenager. He has seen this place evolve. He has also seen the myriad of land grabbers who have tried and failed at taking this land for their own personal gain. It’s a wetland and therefore no construction is permitted.

The most interesting fact about this place is that Wangari Maathai and the green belt movement have fought for it to remain in its current state. A testament to her enduring legacy and the gift that keeps on giving. Thank you Wangari.

In part 2, Lewis explains the logic of Boda riders defending their fellow riders in road accidents with cars. The safety argument made sense and changed our perspective on that issue. He also delves into the classic run ins with traffic police or dealing with the county government both being the main cause of challenge in the Boda business. That doesn’t deter him though. Lewis gets on with things he’s got dreams to fulfill and a higher purpose to serve. What a pleasure to have this chat!

Motorbikes, aka ‘Boda Bodas’ have been the most impactful addition to the Kenyan economy over the last decade, providing employment to millions. Today they’re ubiquitous in many cities including Nairobi, making it one of the most convenient cities to live in. We chat to Lewis, who works in the industry. In part 1 of this video, he talks about his background, his love for riding and the origins of Bodas. Look out for part 2, where we delve into Boda culture and the challenges of these fixtures of modern Kenyan life.

Karura could speak what would she say?

We meet Beatrice Wangui who chose a non-traditional path. She is a jua kali artisan who has worked in this industry for over 40 years. Having been taught by her father in her teenage years, she decided to stay in this line of business despite many naysayers. This trade has provided for her and her family and has given her the most important thing a woman can have: freedom.
