Karen Blixen Museum is a product of a marriage between cousins.

The museum is a residence built in 1912 by a Swedish engineer, Ake Sjogren.

Then, the suburbs were a large coffee plantation owned by a Danish couple Baron Bror and Karen. Karen and Baron were cousins.

Karen was a fine author besides her interest in coffee farming. She was nominated several times for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Her husband Baron ventured into coffee farming in 1917 and hoped to make maximum profit from coffee bushes planted on 600 acres of their 4,500-acre farm.

He later separated from his wife Karen, after living together for eight years, and left Kenya.

Karen, stayed at the farmhouse and continued with her authoring career while also managing the farm.

She later met and fell in love with a British man Denys Finch Hatton. They lived happily for a while until Hattons lost his life in Tsavo in 1930.

Karen – who the suburbs are named after – lived at the farm for one more year and returned to Denmark.

She sold the 4,500-acre property to Remy Marin, who subdivided the land into 20,000 acres and sold it to different people.

The late Lt. Col.G. Lloyd, a British Army Officer, bought the farmhouse in 1935 and lived in it until 1954, when he passed away.

His daughters inherited the house, and it was later sold to the Danish government in 1964.

The Danish government presented the house to the Kenyan government as a gift for attaining independence.

That’s how Kenya ended up with the Karen Blixen Museum.

Did you know that ‘Power’ lead actor Omari Hardwick is in Kenya for a week now?

“I came to Kenya out of the love I have for the country,” he recently told a media personality in Westlands.

His leading role in Starz-top selling TV series ‘Power’ made Omari alias James St Patrick/ghost a popular actor.

Hardwick was cast as the lead in Power, a crime drama created by Courtney Kemp and executively produced by 50 Cent.

At the time, Hardwick was a respected but relatively under-the-radar actor, known for smaller roles in films like Sparkle (2012) and TV shows like Dark Blue.

50 Cent personally advocated for Hardwick to play Ghost.

Omari often recalls: “Curtis saw something in me that I didn’t even see in myself. He challenged me to bring raw humanity to Ghost... He’s a visionary who understands storytelling from the streets to the boardroom.”

He was amazed by the love Kenyans had shown him since touching down in Nairobi.
